Johan de Meij's first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. The movements are: I. GANDALF (The Wizard) II. LOTHLORIEN (The Elvenwood) III. GOLLUM (Smagol) IV. JOURNEY IN THE DARK a. The Mines of Moria b. The Bridge of Khazad-Dm V. HOBBITS The symphony was written in the period between March 1984 and December 1987, and had its premire in Brussels on 15th March 1988, performed by The Royal Band of the Belgian Guides under the baton of Norbert Nozy. In 1989, the Symphony The Lord of the Rings was awarded first prize in the Sudler International Composition Competition in Chicago. In 2001, the orchestral version was premiered by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and was recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra.

The author of Kosterflickornas visa "the Song of the Koster Girls" is Evert Taube (1890-1976). It is one of the 200 popular and beloved songs he wrote and which have made him one of Sweden's "national poets". His popularity and greatness is madeevident since he is honoured to be on the new 50 Kronor banknote which will be issued during 2015. The Koster islands are the most westerly inhabited part of Sweden. The islands are situated in the northern part of the county Bohusln, not far fromthe Norwegian border. The song text goes:Here is the sea that embraces our Bohusln islandsand carries our father and brother in a rocking boat.Come to the beach, come with me, come singby my sideout over Skagerack inthe calm summer night.The arrangement for flute and wind band is written by Jerker Johansson (born 1967), who is conductor of the Gteborg Wind Orchestra, which has made a CD-recording of the song with Evert Taube's son Sven-Bertilinterpreting his father's work.

Spirit of the Winds, a concert/festival work for the developing band, was inspired by the beautiful Temecula Valley of California. Each year, the sky over the valley is filled with hot air balloons creating a visual sight that is not soon forgotten. Of course, balloons are unable to "steer" and must fly with the gentle breezes of the air current. As a result, those subject to the "spirit of the winds" can find themselves over festival grounds or floating above the beautiful Temecula Valley vineyards. Beginning with a bold, yet mysterious statement, the introduction gives way to a soaring melody as our flight begins. Cascading figures in the woodwinds create the effect of wind currents followed by a beautiful secondary melodic statement. The original theme returns leading to a very energetic conclusion. The Procession of the Nobles is the best-known piece that survived an ambitious project which was never completed due to lack of money. No less than five composers, several orchestras, choirs and ballet schools were to participate in what should become an enormousshow-piece of comprehensive theatre. The project failed because of lack of sponsors and internal conflicts, but it provided this magnificent composition. Mlada tells the story of Princess Voislava who kills her friend Princess Mlada because she is in love with Mlada's fianc Prince Jaromir. Mlada's spirit - personified by a female dancer - succeeds in convincing Jaromir in a dream of Voislava's cruel act. Jaromir revenges himself. Morena, goddess of the underworld, invoked by Voislava to chase Mlada's spirit, avenges the dying princess. An infernal storm brings death and destruction. In the final chorus of the opera the spirits of the deceased pay a tribute to the souls of the lovers Jaromir and Mlada united in death.

Composer Semeon Alexanderovich Chernetsky was born in 1881 and died in 1950. A trombonist and a composition student of Alexander Glazunov, he was also a prominent military bandmaster. He was named Director of the Band of the Soviet Army in 1932, and in 1935 he founded the Band of the Ministry of Defense. He composed over 70 marches including March of the Tankmen, which he wrote in 1946, as well as other works for band. The stately manner of this stirring march displays a profound sense of loyalty and national pride that is unmistakable.
