According to Sousa scholar Paul Bierley, Sousa often remarked that the old Scottish ballad Annie Laurie was the most beautiful of all folk songs. In 1883 he wrote the march Bonnie Annie Laurie based on this favorite folk song. In 1880 Sousa became the fourteenth leader of the United States Marine Band, and this was undoubtedly one of the marches that he composed during this period. Highlighted and enhanced in this march-style setting, this wonderful melody never sounded better.

Performed at the 2008 Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, this piece clearly reflects influences ofMendelssohn and Elgar. It is written in a festive setting, but a beautiful cantabile trio, that is very characteristic of the works of Jan van der Roost, is wonderfully included. Frederick J. Ricketts composed his famous marches under the pseudonym Alford. The march On the Quarter Deck was written in 1917 during the 1st World War and was written to commemorate the Battle of Jutland. The quarter deck is the raised deck behind the main mast of a sailing ship; traditionally it was where the captain commanded his vessel and where the ship's colors were kept.
