This delightful Grainger classic was written to depict a jolly old George Friedrich Handel careening down the Strand (the theatre district of London) accompanied by the English popular music of the day. Given the original instrumentation and label as a chamber piece in Grainger's original publication, this transcription is taken directly from Grainger's "four-some" edition of 1912, transposed down a step from G to F major. It is scored to best depict the light (and sometimes percussive) quality of the piano along with the lyrical flow of the strings and the general character of chamber music. Ultimately, the "room music" quality of the original shines through in this skilful transcription while depicting the spirit of the piece in a way that Grainger might have chosen.Duration: 3:35

In Greek mythology, Helios is a Titan who faithfully drove the Sun's chariot across the sky each day, disappearing in the west into Oceanus (the ocean, which the Greeks believed encircled the Earth), and rising out of it again in the east the next morning. Helios' journey at sunrise is referenced musically by the ascending leap in the main theme and the strong driving rhythms of the low winds and percussion. This short overture, originally titled Sapper 300 was commissioned for the 300th Anniversary of the Corps of Royal Engineers in July 2016. It is formed from the Royal Engineers Regimental March Wings and the Corps song Hurrah for the CRE. Wings itself comprises two tunes - The Path across the Hills and Flugel! Flugel!. Hurrah for the CRE is sung to the traditional South African tune Daar le die ding. All the main melodic material is derived from one of these, although they are often spliced together in unusual ways and set in a manner progressing from dark to light. The work was first performed at the ?€Sapper 300?€ Concert at Rochester Castle, 17 July 2016.
