£124.99Shamadan Dance - Thomas Doss
This work has been written within the framework of the Obertne project by the Bezirksblasmusikverband Linz-Land (Austria). It was dedicated to Anton Forstner as a thank you for his years of support to wind music in the Linz-Land District. The Shamadan is an old oriental folk dance full of symbolism in which a female dancer - often on the occasion of a wedding - balances a candelabra on her head as a token of spiritual light. In this work, the euphonium takes up the role of the dancer. At the very beginning, the soloist already has the opportunity to shine in an unaccompanied recitative. Next, the soloist and band alternate, and in the course of the work the band also plays an important part with various technical highlights. More variation is created with a solo passage accompanied by percussion and hand claps, culminating beautifully in a grand tutti towards the end of the piece. Challenging music with much to enjoy!

The melody is rhythmic and comes in short groups of notes, beginning with two notes, then three, then expanding further; the music skates along elegantly. The middle section features a delightful variation on the theme, in which Anderson's gentle-belled sonorities impart a playful innocence. Lux Futura (Light of the Future) was commissioned by the Royal Wind Orchestra Delft and is inspired by the letters 'D-E-L-F-T' using the letter notation system by Bla Bartk. In this 'Delft' cell, there is referral to the 'Trinitas', the bourdon bell of the Old Church in Delft, that only tolls during a funeral of a member of the Dutch Royal Family. The Delft melody switches to the 'Agneta March', which is a reference to the history of the Royal Wind Orchestra Delft. Further on the love theme, played by the bass instruments represents the love of the inhabitants for their city throughout space and time. In the middle movement, the beauty of the city is depicted by the coranglais (English horn) solo, as an ode to the lovely city of Delft. When performed, one can choose to use sound city samples recorded in Delft to create a truly magnificent spectacle. This piece is about the resurrection of these bands following a political decision in favour of the renowned military music organization structure in Austria. 'The Rise of the Phoenix' is an impressive piece, full of bright, colourful melodies and an incredible positive ambiance. There is a beautiful slow middle section with a touch of romance, leading to a spectacular maestoso finale in which you can hear a hint of a famous military signal (as also used in Von Supp's 'Light Cavalry Overture'). A positive and challenging piece full of joy and colour!
