Paths to Urbino (Symphonic Suite) owes its name to a walking tour in which the composer participated in spring 1995 in the Marche, a region of north eastern Italy about 120 miles south of Venice unjustly but mercifully neglected by mass-tourism. At the time, he was inspired more with the idea of writing a musical account of the trip than with any specific thematic material. Holiday Mood is an exuberant introduction, largely constructed on a characteristic two-bar rhythm (6/8 alternating with 2/4, disturbed by the occasional 2/8).

The success of Bill Whelan's Riverdance evolved from a concept for music and dance that he established earlier with The Seville Suite, his first major orchestral composition. The Seville Suite was commissioned for Ireland's National Day at the World Expo 1992 in Seville, Spain. Through the score, Whelan tells the story of legendary Irish war hero Red Hugh O'Donnell. At a mere 21 years of age, O'Donnell successfully led a rebellion against the English government in 1593. Johan de Meij's arrangement is an adaptation featuring highlights from the original suite. Alexander Borodin (1833-1887) was a well-known Russian composer, particularly for his opera, Prince Igor. Borodin was in the middle of composing the piece when he suddenly died. Rimsky-Korsakov and another Russian composer, Alexander Glazanov, completed the unfinished score and the opera had its debut in November of 1890, three and a half years after his death.
