Composer John Harbison writes: 'Rubies is a version of Thelonious Monk's 'Ruby, My Dear', which he composed while still in his teens. When I was invited by the Seattle Symphony to make a short piecereflecting my first musical passions, my thoughts were of Bach and Monk. This iswhere "The Battle of the Hats" gets its distinctive name A truly Norwegian tradition. The composer wanted to write a "crazy" melody, which highlights how "knocked out" a man can be by love, as he tries to win the chosen ones heart.

Preludio all' atto II - Giuseppe Verdi

For the first draft of the libretto of Un ballo in maschera (1859), Giuseppe Verdi drew his inspiration from the grand-opra Gustave III by Auber, an opera performed for the first time in Paris in 1833 that depicted the assassination of the King of Sweden. However, censorship, first in Naples and then in Rome, intervened and imposed heavy modifications. Perhaps because it was too demanding, Verdi showed no intransigence with the requests coming from Naples and refused to alter the libretto. On the other hand, he yielded to the requests of the Roman authorities and agreed to change the site of the action and the identity of the protagonists. Consequently, the scene movedfrom Stockholm to Boston and King Gustav became the Count of Warwick, Governor of Massachusetts. The prelude to the second act is very short and introduces the scene at the place where the scaffold stands. In only a few measures, Verdi skillfully succeeds in condensing the interior restlessness of the protagonists, alongside a prayer of hope.

While it can be fairly easy to select a musical piece for the beginning of a concert, the search for a proper closing piece can sometimes be more difficult. Helping to fill this gap was Stefan Schwalgin's motivation for this Farewell Medley. In this piece he has woven four world-famous folk tunes from the Anglo/Irish/Scottish culture (Danny Boy, Amazing Grace, The Last Post and Auld Lang Syne) into a high-quality arrangement that allows the band to display its full range of colours at the end of any concert.
