Commissioned by the South Stokes Band Boosters of North Carolina, Legend of the Saura is a tribute to the Saura Indians who lived in what today is Stokes County. The piece opens with a vibrant flourish of woodwinds and percussion that immediately leads into the pensive yet driving main theme. The contrasting middle section pulls back to a reflective and mysterious solo for recorder (or optional flute), accompanied by exotic percussion instruments. Engelberg Variations was composed for the Hibriten High School Band in Lenoir, North Carolina and is based on the hymn, "When In Our Music God Is Glorified." It opens with a flourish of activity from the brass and percussion. This gives way to the statement of the theme set in a lovely woodwind chorale featuring flutes and oboes. A lyrical trumpet solo takes the band to a soaring tutti statement of the theme which gets interrupted by a percussion-filled staccato variation. Fragments of the theme are then heard in fun variations juxtaposed against the original theme in augmentation. Engelberg Variations is destined to become a classic! Duration: 6.45

A rapid flourish in 12/8 time opens composer Otto M. Schwarz' first Concerto for trumpet Trumpet Town, written in October 2009. The metric changes that follow affect the pulse rhythmically and melodically, in exciting and unexpected ways. The solo trumpet's displays of technical prowess and bravura alternate with the film-score-like tutti sections of the brass ensemble. The slow, almost elegiac, central section can be performed on the flugelhorn, while the closing reprise demands that both the soloist and the orchestra give of their best as the piece comes to an exciting, colourful, and uplifting finale.
