Dreaming of Dreams - Thomas Kelly
Dreaming of Dreams is a slow-paced and 'feel-good' piece, written for grade 2 Wind Band. After a short reflective introduction, the light and delicate main melody is introduced by the first clarinets followed by a broad and nostalgic counter melody at letter B played by the tenor saxophone, bassoon, first trombone and euphonium. At section D the main melody returns in the first clarinets, this time augmented by the first trumpets and at E we hear the main melody and counter melody together. After a repeat of the opening material, a new melody is featured at letter G played by the first flutes in a new key. The main melody and counter melody are then heard for one final, triumphant time, back in the home key. Fragments of the main melody are then heard throughout different sections of the band as the piece fades away to the final chord.

At first lush and mysterious, then light and uplifting, The Voyage begins. Newcomer George Sweet brings us some invigorating ideas and harmonic treatments, as well as shifting rhythmic feels from 4/4 to 3/4 time. There is some great interplay between various sections of the band that changes from light woodwind sounds to strong brass interjections. George is a composer to watch in the years to come.

Sinfonietta - Score and Parts - Rob Wiffin
Program NotesSinfonietta is a challenging, extended work for symphonic wind band. It is in three movements: Dance with the Devil, A Glimpse of Paradise and Reyes Magos. The first two movements are a transition from dark to light; Dance with the Devil is aggressive and occasionally macabre whereas A Glimpse of Paradise is serene. The first and final parts of the second movement were originally written for a sequence in the Royal Military Tattoo 2000, played under the John Magee poem High Flight – ‘Oh I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth...Put out my hand, and touched the face of God’ - with videos of eagle owls in flight dramatically projected onto the buildings of Horse Guards in Whitehall, London.The last movement, Reyes Magos, is the joyous fiesta of the Three Kings. I wrote Sinfonietta while living in Spain and there January 6th, rather than Christmas Day, is the main day of present-giving, marking the Epiphany, the arrival of the Kings from the Orient at the Nativity.Sinfonietta is technically and expressively demanding but is written within the realms of tonal language.

£97.00Four Scottish Dances - Malcolm Arnold
These dances were composed early in 1957, and are dedicated to the BBC Light Music Festival. They are all based on original melodies but one, the melody of which is composed by Robert Burns. This Classic Band Edition is the definitive wind ensemble orchestration of worldwide renown, as referenced in the composer's own Program Notes:"The first dance is in the style of a slow strathspey -- a slow Scottish dance in 4/4 meter -- with many dotted notes, frequently in the inverted arrangement of the 'Scottish snap.' The name was derived from the strath valley of Spey. The second, a lively reel, begins in the key of E-flat and rises a semitone each time it is played until the bassoon plays it, at a greatly reduced speed, in the key of G. The final statement of the dance is at the original speed in the home key of E-flat.The third dance is in the style of a Hebridean song and attempts to give an impression of the sea and mountain scenery on a calm summer's day in the Hebrides. The last dance is a lively fling, which makes a great deal of use of the open string pitches of the violin (saxophones in the band edition)."

£499.00The Venetian Collection (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Meij, Johan
The Venetian Collection by Johan de Meij consists of four movements which are all a musical reflection of the four paintings of the same names from the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice.Voice of Space is the first movement of The Venetian Collection. The picture on which the music is based on was painted by the Belgian surrealist artist Ren? Magritte. Along with Ensor, Permeke and Delvaux he was one of the most important painters of the 20th century.The Red Tower was inspired by the painting of the same name (La Torre Rossa) by the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico, and was awarded first prize in the International Composition Contest in Oman. One of the towers of the mediaevalwalls of the Italian town of Soncino (home to the band for whom Johan de Meij wrote the work for) shows a remarkable resemblance to the tower in the work of De Chirico. Magic Garden contrasts starkly with the other movements of the cycle. As with the painting, Johan de Meij has tried to reflect the colourful, naive dream world of Paul Klee. The transparent texture, in which the woods play an important role, makes a striking impression throughout this serene movement.Empire of Light is also based on a work by Ren? Magritte. He was a versatile and productive artist producing over 1100 paintings and 700 gouaches. Johan de Meij used the painting Empire of Light as his theme for the last movement of his Venetian Collection. The movements are named after four of his paintings with the following titles:The Menaced AssassinThe Dominion of LightThe Flavour of LightsThe Discovery of FireAs part of my research I visited the Magritte Museum in Brussels to absorb myself in his works. Mysteries of the Horizon is not programmatic, but I have tried to colour each movement with the atmosphere of each Magritte painting. The work is unusual in that there are four movement, not the standard three. The second movement, The Dominion of Light, acts as a light relief between the first and third movements. The concerto gives much opportunity to the soloist to demonstrate different aspects of the instrument.- Nigel Clarke
