In the Ancient World the seven most beautiful monuments were called 'The seven Wonders of the World'. In his Symphony nr.1, The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World' the young Dutch composer Alex Poelman has made a musical portrait of these splendid human realizations which are now, but for one, all destroyed. The symphony is masterly and lavishly orchestrated and portrays both the power of the sovereigns of ancient times and the splendour of the most beautiful buildings and works of art they have had built. Moreover, neither the seducing Eastern charm nor the mysterious exotic atmosphere are failing.Alex Poelman (Arnhem, 1981) studied informatics at the Twente University and plays French horn in several top amateur bands. Under the guidance of David Rowland he wrote his first composition for wind band 'Volcano'. This was followed by 'Theseus', 'Symphony nr. 1 'The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World', 'D-Day' and 'Aquila Chrysaetos'. This symphony was premiered on 28 May 2004 at Enschede. One year later, it was recorded on CD by the new Dutch military band KMKJWF conducted by Norbert Nozy.I. THE TEMPLE OF ARTEMIS.The Greek goddess Artemis, daughter of Zeus and Leto and twin sister of Apollo, was the goddess of the hunt and was especially worshipped in Arcadia. In the town of Ephesus, an Ionic colony in Asia Minor, a splendid temple was built in honour of Artemis which was destroyed in 356 B.C. when Herostratos set fire to it. Some years later it was reconstructed.II. THE GREAT PYRAMID OF CHEOPSCheops, the second pharaoh of the 4th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt (3rd century B.C.) had the big pyramid built at Gizeh on the left bank of the Nile, next to Cairo. The technical perfection and the huge dimensions of this magnificent 137 m high building were never equalled. It is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that was not destroyed and is kept undamaged up to this day. III. THE STATUE OF ZEUS Zeus, son of Chronos and Rhea, was the leading god of the Greek pantheon and, according to Homer 'the father of all gods and all humans'. He was the god of the celestial light and controlled all physical phenomena. In the Greek town of Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games, there was a splendid statue representing the Olympic Zeus. It had been sculptured about 433 B.C. by the great Athenian sculptor Phobias (ca 490 - ca 430 B.C.) and was considered as the nicest statue of the ancient Greek world. IV. THE MAUSOLEUM AT HALICARNASSOS. Halikarnassos (the actual Bodrum in Turkey) was at one time the capital of Asia Minor. When king Mausolos died in 353 B.C., his wife and sister Artemisa ordered to build a huge funeral monument (Mausoleum) for her deceased husband. It gave its name to all large funeral monuments in the world.

Originally written in 2017 for 'Banda Orquestral de Cmara de Lobos 'Os Infantes'', this composition is now published here for Concert Band, arranged and revised by the author himself. With a Swinged Funk Style, this piece present us with a neat and cool groove that will put your light musical habilities to the test. When asked about the title of the piece for the first time, the author who at the time still didn't thought about it yet, replied 'Who knows?'. And the name stuck!

This is one of the most popular British marches; it was written by Thomas Bidgood (1870-1925) a gifted music teacher who conducted his own professional orchestra, several theatre orchestras and wind bands. He composed a lot of light orchestral music and some fifteen marches, among which 'Vimy Ridge' and 'Sons of the Brave' (1899). The latter was dedicated to the 'Duke of York's Military School' and was first performed in public during the Boers War in South Africa at the turn of the century.

Dreaming of Dreams - Thomas Kelly
Dreaming of Dreams is a slow-paced and 'feel-good' piece, written for grade 2 Wind Band. After a short reflective introduction, the light and delicate main melody is introduced by the first clarinets followed by a broad and nostalgic counter melody at letter B played by the tenor saxophone, bassoon, first trombone and euphonium. At section D the main melody returns in the first clarinets, this time augmented by the first trumpets and at E we hear the main melody and counter melody together. After a repeat of the opening material, a new melody is featured at letter G played by the first flutes in a new key. The main melody and counter melody are then heard for one final, triumphant time, back in the home key. Fragments of the main melody are then heard throughout different sections of the band as the piece fades away to the final chord.

Program NotesSinfonietta is a challenging, extended work for symphonic wind band. It is in three movements: Dance with the Devil, A Glimpse of Paradise and Reyes Magos. The first two movements are a transition from dark to light; Dance with the Devil is aggressive and occasionally macabre whereas A Glimpse of Paradise is serene. The first and final parts of the second movement were originally written for a sequence in the Royal Military Tattoo 2000, played under the John Magee poem High Flight – ‘Oh I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth...Put out my hand, and touched the face of God’ - with videos of eagle owls in flight dramatically projected onto the buildings of Horse Guards in Whitehall, London.The last movement, Reyes Magos, is the joyous fiesta of the Three Kings. I wrote Sinfonietta while living in Spain and there January 6th, rather than Christmas Day, is the main day of present-giving, marking the Epiphany, the arrival of the Kings from the Orient at the Nativity.Sinfonietta is technically and expressively demanding but is written within the realms of tonal language.

The Venetian Collection by Johan de Meij consists of four movements which are all a musical reflection of the four paintings of the same names from the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice.Voice of Space is the first movement of The Venetian Collection. The picture on which the music is based on was painted by the Belgian surrealist artist Ren? Magritte. Along with Ensor, Permeke and Delvaux he was one of the most important painters of the 20th century.The Red Tower was inspired by the painting of the same name (La Torre Rossa) by the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico, and was awarded first prize in the International Composition Contest in Oman. One of the towers of the mediaevalwalls of the Italian town of Soncino (home to the band for whom Johan de Meij wrote the work for) shows a remarkable resemblance to the tower in the work of De Chirico. Magic Garden contrasts starkly with the other movements of the cycle. As with the painting, Johan de Meij has tried to reflect the colourful, naive dream world of Paul Klee. The transparent texture, in which the woods play an important role, makes a striking impression throughout this serene movement.Empire of Light is also based on a work by Ren? Magritte. He was a versatile and productive artist producing over 1100 paintings and 700 gouaches. Johan de Meij used the painting Empire of Light as his theme for the last movement of his Venetian Collection. Mysteries of the Horizon (After Four Rene Magritte Surrealist Paintings)A Concerto for Trumpet and Wind OrchestraMysteries of the Horizon is written and dedicated to Harmen Vanhoorne, and Matthew J George and the University of St Thomas Wind Ensemble.The subject material for my concerto are four surrealist paintings by the Belgian artist Rene Magritte (1898-1967). The movements are named after four of his paintings with the following titles:The Menaced AssassinThe Dominion of LightThe Flavour of LightsThe Discovery of FireAs part of my research I visited the Magritte Museum in Brussels to absorb myself in his works. Mysteries of the Horizon is not programmatic, but I have tried to colour each movement with the atmosphere of each Magritte painting. The work is unusual in that there are four movement, not the standard three. The second movement, The Dominion of Light, acts as a light relief between the first and third movements. The concerto gives much opportunity to the soloist to demonstrate different aspects of the instrument.- Nigel Clarke
