After 30 years, Johan de Meij revisits Middle-Earth, the enchanting mythological world of J.R.R. Tolkien, with his spectacular Symphony No. 5 Return to Middle Earth. Although there are thematic reminiscences of his monumental first Symphony The Lord of the Rings from 1988, De Meij is putting a completely different musical vibe into his new symphony. This instrumental movement vividly describes the black dragon Ancalagon, the largest creature in Tolkiens mythological world.

The composition "Northern Anniversary" was written for 'Leeuwarden, Cultural Capital of Europe 2018', commissioned by the 'Joost Wiersma' Music Association in Jistrum and is a festive work. A short opening fanfare is followed by a cheerful faster section using themes comprised of a type of bolero, and one more majestic in nature. Then comes a sombre and more reflective middle section, which features various solo contributions, and concludes with a reprise of the faster first section.

Concert for wind band and trumpet solo. Spices is a commission from the trumpet player Jos Chfer, to whom this piece is dedicated. It was played for the first time in the "43rd Annual International Conference of San Antonio, Texas", in May 2018. The piece is divided in different sections that refer to the taste universe represented by combinations of different spices. To stimulate the senses, different elements are opposed such as: Fresh Mint, Sugar and Cinnamon, Chili Pepper and Peppermint.

Centenary 2019 is a three-movement suite based on a local folksong and was commissioned by Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem, from the Dutch province of Friesland, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2019. 'AwakeningVillage', the first movement, musically describes the waking up and coming to life of the village. 'Bintje Monument' was inspired by a famous sculpture that was placed to honour headmaster Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929) whodeveloped the well-known potato variety called 'bintje'. The finale, 'Journey into the Unknown' refers to the band's memorable 2011 concert trip to the United States of America, in which the composer combines elements of thefolksong and fragments from 'The Star-Spangled Banner'. The piece consists of a wide range of playful and melodic sequences as well as some galvanizing rhythmical passages.

From the opening raindrops and first few notes upon which the piece is built,this fast-paced and engaging work takes us through a series of variations that depict cascading waterfalls, flowing rivers, crashing waves, trickling creeks, and ripples over the surface of a calm lake. Gemini Concerto was commissioned by and written for Ryukoku University (Japan), Andr Henry and Shoichiro Hokazono. Set in three movements, the concerto aims to explore the close relationship, as solo instruments, between the trumpet and euphonium, exploiting the many common factors between the two as well as the subtly different characteristics they possess in terms of both lyrical and rhythmic playing. The first movement is a bustling toccata and the second movement is lyrical and improvisatory in nature. A fantastic piece and a great addition to the repertoire!
