Who are they? For what have they come? However, once they bring out the drum, the triangle, and the cymbals, it is apparent that they are here to celebrate. After attending a performance of Hnsel und Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck, the composer decided to write a commissioned piece for 4 horns and concert band based on the beautiful melody "Abendsegen", as used in Engelbert's famous overture. The composition can be performed with three or four solo horns with cues in the others parts and in the band. This work can be played with the horn section of your own band; the two extra horn parts noted in the full score are optional and can be left out. This piece is a stunning challenge for your french horn section!

This composition is based on the beautiful chorale melody Wie schn leuchtet der Morgenstern (How beautifully the morning star shines). Like the chorale fantasias by Bach and Buxtehude, this is a fantasia in which the original theme is usedand altered throughout the work in various ways. Slow passages are alternated with fast ones, and finally a grand tutti arrives in which the original chorale theme sounds joyfully in a majestic finale. For extra colour and dimension, an optionalorgan part has been added, that can be used when the circumstances are appropriate. On the full score, the various organ entries are indicated.

This attractive concert march starts with an elevated, determined intro, followed by a playful theme in the descant register - with, in the reprise, an added counterpart in the tenor register. The following stately bass solo is accentuated by the trumpet section, and a dynamic contrasting effect adds extra colour. The trio part starts with a new cantabile theme, which transforms into a solid tutti version with ornamentations in the descant. After a dynamically varying interlude the trio part is repeated.

The story of the origin of Diagram for Symphonic Band is a curious one. Andr Waignein was enjoying a meal together with his great friend Jean-Marie Vivier - representative director of l'Oreal Belgilux and the same man who made the performance of the famous Cantate aux Etoiles, with 750 performers possible. Jean Plaquet, an appreciated associate of both gentlemen was also present.As an acknowledgement, Andr Waignein wanted to dedicate a composition to the band where Mr. Vivier has been chairman for 20 years. In connection with this, Andr Waignein was supposed to receive some extra information about the 120 years old history of this band, which has always been led by a memberof the Vivier family. In a flash this history was presented : using a diagram Mr. Vivier drew the power-lines of this more than 100 year old band.And of course, the title was found ! The only thing left to do, was for Andr Waignein to transform this diagram into music.
