Before entering the International Training College in 1914 to become a Salvation Army officer he developed as a musician through the playing of the cornet and euphonium of the Corps band. In 1926 he was transferred to the Music Editorial Department and also became a member of the International Staff Band. During a period of 9 years he was the Bandmaster of the Rosehill Band with whom he made many recordings and broadcasts. Later he directed a number of other significant Salvation Army bands and also served time abroad in Czechoslovakia.Programme NoteMarch Rosehill was composed by the conductor of the Rosehill band, a one Colonel Albert Jakeway and was named after the premises that were occupied by the Salvation Armys Assurance Society when they were evacuated during the World War 2. It is a majestic march that will find good use in a performance or marching band.

The Bennett Band Books, published in four volumes starting in 1923, were used to teach literally millions of young band musicians in the middle of the twentieth century the march form and style. The pieces utilized in this book are: Activity, Summit, Success, Project, Courage, Mister Joe, Genius, Improvement, At Sight, Little Rastus, Laurel and Aline. These delightful marches, composed by famous march composer Henry Fillmore using the pseudonym Harold Bennett, have been given new life by arranger Larry Clark. The original essence of these marches is retained and only the instrumentation and some range issues have been altered to fit the needs of today's developing bands. This collection includes twelve of the Bennett marches along with a helpful march warm-up section composed by Larry Clark to help you teach the march form and style to young students. The largest of David Maslanka's wind symphonies in scale and duration, Symphony No. 3 was commissioned by the University of Connecticut Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Gary Green, conductor, and premiered by them in 1991. It is in five movements and lasts nearly 50 minutes. The moderate tempo and forceful character of the first movement contrast with the serene "nature" music of the second movement. The third movement, a fast and bristling scherzo largely in A Minor, is followed by two slower movements, both labeled "lament." The composer characterizes the music of these movements as both sorrowful and joyful. The fifth movement, in particular, has the lamenting character overcome by an ecstatic vision of natural beauty and the life force. Symphony No. 3 is arguably Maslanka's most profound and satisfying large-scale work, and it ends in an unequivocal A Major that has the feeling of a benediction. Gauthier Dupertuis wrote Anemoia as part of his master's thesis at the Lausanne University of Music. It is dedicated to the most significant figure in his musical life: his teacher Jean-Claude Kolly.Anemoia is the name given to the feeling of nostalgia that one feels for a time that has never known. This emotion often translates into the uneasy sensation of having lost something important or of not living at the right place or time. Fascinated by this concept, Gauthier Dupertuis tried to translate it into music oscillating between exaltation, anguish and nostalgia.The piece is formed by two movements: (Un)desired sorrow and Behind the glass of time. The first movement initially evokes the feeling of unease one feels when suddenly struck by anemoia. It then evolves into majestic atmospheres, marking our admiration for times gone by. The second movement treats anemoia in a more melancholic way.The premiere took place on 6th December 2024, during Jean-Claude Kolly's last concert as a conductor of the Concordia de Fribourg, marking thirty years spent conducting this wind orchestra.

£204.00The Light of Resistance - Franco Cesarini
Franco Cesarini was commissioned to write The Light of Resistance by the Filarmonica di Villadossola APS (Piedmont, Italy) for its 125th anniversary. The Villadossola revolt was an uprising that took place in November 1943 in the homonymous municipality during World War II. The partisans, with the support of local workers, managed to temporarily liberate the town from nazi-fascist forces. It was one of the first acts of armed resistance against the German occupation in Italy but was harshly repressed by nazi-fascist troops who regained control of the territory. Although it was suppressed, the uprising remained a symbol of courage and determination.The slow introduction of the composition creates an atmosphere of latent tension, which gradually intensifies until it explodes in a rapid movement, symbolizing the struggle. Two contrasting musical themes collide, embodying the conflict between opposing forces. In the central section, a prayer rises delicately, then evolves into a heroic parade celebrating the temporary triumph of the revolt. However, this victory is fleeting; dissonant harmonies interrupt the scene, representing the brutal repression of the insurrection. In the finale, the heroic theme reemerges, evoking sacrifice as a spark of unshakeable hope. A moment of contemplation closes the composition, honouring the lives broken and reaffirming hope for a future of peace and regained freedom.The premiere of The Light of Resistance took place on 30th March, 2025 in Villadossola, performed by the Filarmonica di Villadossola, Franco Cesarini conductor.
