Commissioned by Furman University for the inauguration of its 12th president, Jay Bocook's Gloriana is based on The Faerie Queene, an incomplete English epic poem written by Edmund Spenser and dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I. Inthe poem, Queen Elizabeth is represented as the faerie queene herself, Gloriana. This stately work for winds and percussion has a regal quality enhanced by soaring melodies and punctuated with fanfare-like brass figures. The word nexus is defined as a tie or link between people and events. Nexus for solo trumpet and band includes several links between composer James Curnow and educator Alfred Watkins, to whom the work is dedicated. A well-knowntheme (particularly to Mr. Watkins' students) is drawn upon as the piece utilizes two primary musical settings - an energetic and agile scherzo that appears in the beginning and again at the end, contrasted with an expressiveballad theme. The soloist at the premiere (and on the recording) is Christopher Watkins, Alfred's son. This is a well-crafted and rewarding work for soloist and band alike. This piece requires a smaller woodwind-brass ensemble without percussion. Penderecki composed the Fanfare for a parish fair in Poland. This short effective piece will be a pleasure to rehearse and perform by any wind orchestra. A special role is assigned to the trumpet 'nella sala' which attracts attention away from the ensemble. The wide dynamic range demands from the conductor the careful arrangement of the dramatic structure. Commissioned by the Richardson (TX) Community Band, Silver Celebration commemorates 25 years of service by their conductor, George Jones. The work combines elements of traditional march style with the bravura of epic film scores,resulting in a piece that is both festive and celebratory in nature. The opening is a rousing 6/8 march featuring various sections of the band and exciting cross rhythms, and then contrasted with a beautifully flowing lyricstatement. Dirty Dancing - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen
In November 2014, the conductor Peter Szilvay, on behalf of Christiania Wind Ensemble (Oslo), commissioned a piece from me. He was looking for a quite short piece of music, effective, intense and dance-like.He mentioned A Short Ride in a Fast Machine by John Adams, and I answered his request by writing my piece, Dirty Dancing. It is a rather easy listening piece that play with riffs and rhythms.Szilvay did not conduct the premiere of the piece. Trond Huseb took over and conducted the premiere the 7th of March 2015 in Oslo.
