Commissioned by the Maynard Music Association for the Fowler School Band (Massachusetts), Kevin Zozik, conductor. Tigers are among the most majestic and fearsome creatures in the world - beautiful, graceful, deadly. This tribute to these wonders of nature incorporates Asian musical influences from the various locales where tigers are found. The mysterious opening hints at the hidden presence of the tiger as he stalks his prey; then the music abruptly takes off as he suddenly springs to the attack and the chase begins. The cat-and-mouse chase continues until the definitive and inevitable finish.

Commissioned by and dedicated to the Folly Quarter Middle School Band in Ellicott City, Maryland, Andrew Sprang, conductor. This highly programmatic piece gives you a front-row seat in the viewing stands as it depicts a high-speed car race. The opening section starts the engines, sets the pole position, and then the race is on. The action slows briefly for a caution flag, and then its full throttle as the race resumes with a wild dash to the finish line, closing with a triumphant victory lap.

£140.80Vespri Siciliani - Giuseppe Verdi
In 1885 Verdi wrote I Vespri Siciliani, an opera which would provide him with an international reputation. The overture is based on motifs and themes from the opera, used in a rhapsodic way. A mysterious introduction and several energetic themes alternate with some passionate melodies, the secret of which only Verdi had. The French composer and conductor Paul Desprey made this arrangement for symphonic band.

£52.70Hornpipe - Henk van Lijnschooten
HENK VAN LIJNSCHOOTEN (Den Haag 1928) does not need any introduction. He is one of the pioneers of modern wind band music in The Netherlands and has a worldwide reputation as conductor, teacher and composer. From 1957 to 1964 he was director of the famous Marine Band of the Royal Dutch Marine. It was for the 1960 Delft Tattoo that he made this arrangement of the well-known British sailor's song Hornpipe, named after the typical celtic wooden wind instrument (originally made of cow horns in Wales). The Dutch dance 'horlepiep' refers to the same song and dance.

£90.30Glenn Meets Wolfgang - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
JEF PENDERS (Hoensbroek 1928) is also a very popular Dutch wind band music composer who also does a great job as conductor, arranger and recording supervisor. In his novelty Glenn meets Wolfgang (1969) he arranged the tune of Mozart's 'Sonate Facile' into the Glenn Miller style. It proved to be a successful formula as this piece was followed by 'Glenn beats the Battle of Jericho', 'Glenn plays after the Ball' and, more recently, 'Glenn mucks about with the clarinet'. £159.60Rapsodie Symphonique - Serge Lancen
The Rapsodie Symphonique, written in 1976, was commissioned by the French Broadcasting Institution for the European Radio Composition Contest. It was recorded by the Musique des Gardiens de la Paix conducted by Dsir Dondeyne on 4 March 1977 and was awarded a First Prize at the E.R.U. (European Radio Union) contest. The rhapsody was published in 1978 and dedicated to his American friend Professor Al Wright, conductor of the Purdue University Band. The latter recorded the composition in 1979 as it had already recorded the Festival Kerkrade Jan Molenaar conducting in 1971 and the Parade Concerto with the composer at the piano and Jan Molenaar conducting in 1973.

£116.40Rapsodie sur des Themes Normands - Serge Lancen
The Paris born composer and pianist Serge Lancen (1922-2005) studied the piano with Marguerite Long and composition with Tony Aubin at the conservatory of his native town and was awarded a Prix de Rome. Lancen composed symphonic music, choral works, ballet music and several concertos.In 1960 he met his ancient study friend Dsir Dondeyne, conductor of the Paris Metropolitan Police Band, who incited him to write for symphonic band. Lancen wrote an impressive series of wind band works that earned him an international reputation. Among his most successful compositions are Manhattan Symphony (1962) an Cape Kennedy (1970), but we should not forget that Lancen also wrote several fine works for symphonic bands of average level. So he did in 1976 by writing two rhapsodies based respectively on Breton and Normandy themes. The Rhapsody on Themes from Normandy was recorded in 1977 on a long playing record by the French National Police Band conducted by Pierre Bigot alongside with Le Mont-Saint-Michel, Hymne la Musique and Rapsodie sur des Thmes Breton. Rhapsody on Themes from Normandy is a piece that is characterized by an original orchestration and fluent melodic lines, two main characters of Lancen's music.

The Dutch composer Meindert Boekel (Amsterdam, 1914 - Hilversum, 1989) became famous because of the Scherzo from his 'Suite Classique' already published by Molenaar Edition in 1948. Boekel was, no doubt, one of the pioneers of modern wind music in The Netherlands. He became popular as the first conductor of the Dutch National Brass Band in 1962. He composed some sixty works for band; several of them were of religious inspiration.

These variations on a popular Dutch children's song about a 'Count from The Hague' are infact studies in orchestral playing. Aspects dealing with playing in tune; overall sound; ensemble playing; rhythm; articulation and dynamics are paid attention to.The scoring is stricktly limited to four-part-harmony, which makes this work suitable for incomplete orchestras or other windgroups and youth orchestras.When performing with a full band it is recommended to vary the scoring according to the character of each respective variation. In this way the conductor can have a creative share in the overall performance of this music.
