Thirty To Tango - David Matthews
This tango was originally composed in 1990 as the fourth movement of the composer's Fourth Symphony. It was intended there as a modern equivalent of the classical minuet. The tango is the most alluring of contemporary dances, and a number of arrangements of it exist, including ones for solo piano and for various chamber ensembles. This latest version for thirty (or more) players was arranged in 1999 by the composer especially for the Faber Wind Band Series.

Based on Alexander Dumas' adaptation of E. T. A. Hoffman's story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, the ballet premiered in December of 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Tchaikovsky selected eight pieces from the ballet and created The Nutcracker Suite, which became an immediate success and to this day remains one of the most popular ballets, and contains some of the best-loved Christmas music. The French composer Daniel Franois Esprit Auber (1782-1871) witnessed many important developments in the history of music ? from Luigi Cherubini to Richard Wagner. His extensive output consisted mainly of operas, but unfortunately today only two of these are still well known, including the comic opera Fra Diavolo. The story concerns Fra Diavolo, a famous Italian bandit and soldier from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and is one of crime, lust and treachery. The overture has a classical structure and is filled with striking themes and motifs and has a particularly unusual introduction (for the time) with the snare drum taking the leading role!
