Its recurring motif on trumpets, con brio, develops the opening bars of the Fanfare. Extra Score only. The whole shape of A Plain Man's Hammer owes something to classical sonata form. It is a two part form of which the first is an exposition containing two tonally contrasted subjects and the second contains a development section where harmonies move rapidly towards a recapitulation of the two original subjects, this time the contrast being reconciled in the home key. The first large section of A Plain Man's Hammer is an exposition containing two main ideas and other material associated with them. Development is replaced by a parade of incomplete parodies: a waltz almost in the style of Chopin; a sort of Tango; a Mahlerian march; something close to Janacek; a cheap imitation of a Flamenco; a corruption of Oranges and Lemons; a pop song; a military march which gets somewhat out of hand; a Viennese Waltz to set your feet tripping, and an even cheaper imitation of a Flamenco. At the end of the work the associated material of the opening reappears in maturity; the major ideas play a subservient role, reappearing only in the final coda. Duration: 14 mins.

Selections from Boris Godunov Wind Band Set (Score & Parts) - Takahashi, Tohru
Composer Modest Moussorgsky (1839-1881) came from the prosperous environment of Russian nobility. In 1865, after his officer's education, he joined the guard's regiment in St. Petersburg. Here he met a number of well-known colleague-composers, including Balakirev, Cui, Rimsky- Korsakov and Borodin. They strived to develop a "classical style" of composing while at the same time retaining a strong Russian influence. His opera Boris Godunov tells the tale of Boris, who with the support of the people, declared himself Tsar, but totally fell short of the role. The opera became popular in the re-orchestrated version produced by Rimsky-Korsakov in 1896. Tohru Takahashi has used the beautiful musical themes of this opera in Selections from Boris Godunov - a captivating work for concert band. 0:11:40

The Sounds of Christmas Joy
Opening with a fanfare based on "Joy To The World" featuring prominent bells and chimes, Swearingen then seques into an expressive, "classical" setting of Beethoven's famous "Ode to Joy". After a tasty modulation into a new setting of "Ode to Joy" with modern harmonies and tone colors, the final section presents a traditional rendition of "Joy to the World". Concludes with a "classically" based presto! Exceptional!
