The picturesque Mediterranean village has a distinct Spanish flair, and the magnificent landscape surrounding the town leaves a lasting impression. Valdemossa is also a place of cultural tradition - composer Frdric Chopin spent several months in this town. The work consists of several parts merging with various characters. Calm, pensive passages alternate with expressive lyrical and rhythmic parts connected by a theme that returns in different variations. Spanish folklore elements--which are embedded in the formal structure of a"classical" rhapsody and represent the southern European atmosphere of Valdemossa--leave their mark on the complete work.
