The concert waltz 'Das Romantische Mittelrheintal' (the romantic Middle Rhine valley) was composed by Manfred Schneider (who passed away on 18 November 2008) at the request of the mayor of his dwelling-place Kestert, in the neighbourhood of the famous Loreley cliff alongside the Rhine. The composition describes both the romantic atmosphere of this 60 kilometres long valley of the Middle Rhine as the dangers for the navigation in the neighbourhood of the world famous Loreley cliff. This classical waltz is extremely well suited for your next New Year's concert.

The andante in C major K 315 (K6 285e) was commissioned to Mozart from a rich Dutchman called Ferdinand De Jean. The piece has a simple solo writing and a linear symphonic part. The flute solo can easily emerge without having to compete with the orchestra. Written in the classical form of the sonata we find two themes. This follows a brief one and a revival.

Parsifal, written in 1882, was the final opera by composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883). The prelude is a miniature masterpiece consisting of only 116 measures. The form of the prelude is similar to that of the classical three-movement overture and consists of four musical motives: the mystical realm of the Holy Grail; the Grail itself in the Dresden Amen; Faith, represented by the brass chorale; and the Agony of Amfortas. This transcription by John R. Bourgeois faithfully adheres to Wagners intent both in key relationships and orchestration.

Based on Alexander Dumas' adaptation of E. T. A. Hoffman's story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, the ballet premiered in December of 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Tchaikovsky selected eight pieces from the ballet and created The Nutcracker Suite, which became an immediate success and to this day remains one of the most popular ballets, and contains some of the best-loved Christmas music.
