A Sevenoaks Suite - Philip Sparke
A Sevenoaks Suite was commissioned by the Sevenoaks and Tonbridge Concert Band from Kent in the south-east of England. The suite describes 3 famous landmarks in the Sevenoaks and Tonbridge area: 'Knole Park', situated to the south-east of Sevenoaks. 'The Chapel - Tonbridge School': This movement centres around a hymn-like chorale, depicting the years of worship that have taken place within the chapel, and 'The Vine Bandstand' suggesting the type of music often played in bandstands. It is in march form, but is not actually a march throughout, veering off into other styles before ending emphatically.

Song Of Friendship - Philip Sparke
Song of Friendship was commissioned by the Concert Band of Jumonji University, Saitama, Japan and their conductor, Yutaka Nishida. The commission marked the 50th year of Yutaka Nishida's involvement with bands as a player, conductor and radio presenter. The ceremonial Song of Friendship opens with an extended fanfare, largely featuring the brass section. This leads to the main theme, which develops slowly until it is played by the full band. A change of key signals a contrasting central section containing a quiet woodwind chorale, which grows until the return of the triumphant sounding main theme. Elements of the opening fanfare then close the work.

Rubies (After Thelonious Monk's Ruby, My Dear) - John Harbison
Composer John Harbison writes: 'Rubies is a version of Thelonious Monk's 'Ruby, My Dear', which he composed while still in his teens. When I was invited by the Seattle Symphony to make a short piecereflecting my first musical passions, my thoughts were of Bach and Monk. Since I had recently made some Bach-like chorale preludes, I chose to make a version of Monk's tune, first in a chamber-musical, contrapuntal manner, then inthe grand orchestral style I had always heard lurking there.' Dur: 5:30 (Recorded live by the Rutgers Symphony Band - Peter Stanley Martin, guest conductor).
