This work was commissioned by the Rokko Verde Wind Orchestra in Japan. Musically it depicts aspects of both the beautiful, open-minded home of the Wind Orchestra - the Kobe City of Hyogo Prefecture - as well as the hope felt following the difficultyof the 1995 Hanshin-Awaii earthquake. Satoshi Yagisawa uses an impressive chorale as a cornerstone of this piece, which is written in his recognisable energetic style.

Composer John Harbison writes: 'Rubies is a version of Thelonious Monk's 'Ruby, My Dear', which he composed while still in his teens. When I was invited by the Seattle Symphony to make a short piecereflecting my first musical passions, my thoughts were of Bach and Monk. Since I had recently made some Bach-like chorale preludes, I chose to make a version of Monk's tune, first in a chamber-musical, contrapuntal manner, then inthe grand orchestral style I had always heard lurking there.' Delmar Festival Overture is a powerful concert overture utilizing many of the contemporary compositional techniques that distinguish John O'Reilly's work. From the opening brass fanfare to the exciting conclusion, syncopated rhythms and numerous, interesting shifts of meter abound. Biting polychords establish the predominant harmonic structure for the opening Allegro, but the majestic theme that follows in the horns and saxes takes on a decidedly British band style. The lyrical middle section begins with a fully scored chorale, which serves as the subject for a lovely melodic development featuring woodwinds and French horn. A brilliant brass fanfare ushers in a return tothe opening section, which is now reorganized and further developed to bring this exciting overture to its dramatic conclusion. Arden Variations is a theme and variations form in three movements, each replete with melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic variations on the simple 8-measure chorale theme of the opening Prelude. Originally intended as an analytical study for students in the composer's Advanced Harmony course at Louisiana State University, the piece seemed to demand further development as each new harmonic device was introduced. Its frequent distant-key modulations and varied rhythmic excursions keep the simple melody alive and interesting throughout its six-and-a-half minute length. (6:30)
