KYO-WA is a suite in three movements - Fanfare, Chorale and March, which composer Satoshi Yagisawa wrote individually year on year between 2008 and 2010 for a symphonic wind band. The word KYO in the title can mean resonance, but also togetherness, working together and competition. WA means peace and harmony. These ideas, together with a broad palette of emotions from sadness and fear to hope and rapture, have been woven into a piece that is typical of his new compositional style.

This innovative work makes use of an optional piano part that is most likely playable by someone already in the band. It was written in honor of Matt Rhodes, a student at John T. Baker Middle (Damascus, MD), who passed away during a battle with spina bifida. It represents his kindness, courage, and determination despite his confinement to a wheelchair. An opening ethereal section and chorale moves into an exciting portrayal of life which concludes with a humorous ending that was very characteristic of Matt. A very musical new composition which teaches much more than notes.

Watts was for the English hymn as Ambrose was for the medieval Latin hymn and what Martin Luther was for the German chorale. He wrote about 750 songs, and some of them survide the ravahes of time. (Joy To The World, When I survey the wondrous cross, I sing the Mighty Power of God) "There is a Land of Pure Delight" is usually in English-speaking areas sung on Luther Orlando Emerson's melody ('Ascription').
