Jubilee For Winds - Claude T. Smith
This 1987 work is characteristic of the lyrical style capabilities of Claude T. Smith. Opening with a brilliant fanfare it moves into the lyrical section featuring woodwind solos, brass chorale and woodwind choir. Development is then toward a rollicking finale. A challenging work eminently playable by good high school and college/university bands.

Meramec Rhapsody - Claude T. Smith
This work is a commission by the Missouri Bandmasters Association to honor the 50th Anniversary of the MMEA. From the opening melody stated by unison flutes, 1st clarinet and 1st trumpet, the work quickly starts through a development of that melody that only this composer does so well. The writing is very "rubato" chorale style often interrupted with short allegro sections but always returning to the opening statement. There is a short flute solo passage as well as a very fluent alto sax solo. A dramatic piece that bands will enjoy playing for years to come.

Tone Poem Symphonique - John Cacavas
Best described as a contemporary chorale, this moving and introspective work demonstrates colors, textures and contrasts that are possible with the modern concert band. The independent and interweaving melodic lines make this a study in phrasing and interpretation for both conductor and performer. A work well suited as a contest warm-up selection. Prelude to Parsifal - Richard Wagner
Parsifal, written in 1882, was the final opera by composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883). The prelude is a miniature masterpiece consisting of only 116 measures. The form of the prelude is similar to that of the classical three-movement overture and consists of four musical motives: the mystical realm of the Holy Grail; the Grail itself in the Dresden Amen; Faith, represented by the brass chorale; and the Agony of Amfortas. This transcription by John R. Bourgeois faithfully adheres to Wagners intent both in key relationships and orchestration.

A Golden Legacy - Scott Watson
The music of A Golden Legacy reflects both the joy and reverence many of us feel in our role as transmitters of the band tradition. The legacy in the title refers to the long-lasting impact directors have on students lives. This piece alternates between two themes - the first is a majestic fanfare that develops into a purposeful and resolute march; the second theme is a reverent hymnlike chorale that undergoes several variations, with the last one erupting into a festive musical celebration for an exuberant finish.

Canticle Of The Sun - Larry Clark
A piece with a lyrical chorale and a hymn-like quality, Canticle of the Sun is written in a free flowing style, which is a different approach from this composer. The middle section is based on quintal harmony and contrasts the full sonority of the more open lyrical main theme.
