Chivalry dates back to the medieval institution of knighthood; while its meaning has changed over time, Of Chivalry and Valor celebrates some of the central tenets deeply rooted in the original chivalric code. The militaristic opening depicts a courageous battle where knights demonstrated their loyalty, bravery, and valor, followed by softer and gentler values such as generosity and selflessness. For the finale we return to the battlefield to witness the chivalrous warriors heroic triumph. Of Chivalry and Valor was commissioned and premiered by Anthony Rivera, Eastern Technical High School, Baltimore County Public Schools and won the National Band Association Merrill Jones Composition Contest in 2014.

These mighty beasts of legend and lore were believed to wield almost limitless might and power. Clad in a coat of virtually impenetrable scales, armed with claws like steel and breath of fire, these were truly fearsome and awe-inspiring creatures. The vision of an epic battle between these great monsters is depicted, replete with percussive sounds of impact as they collide with one another while winds and brass create melodic lines of unrelenting flame and fury.

Intense brass statements, brisk woodwind ostinatos, and running lines combine with unrelenting percussive parts to depict a fierce battle scene. The action then subsides into a triumphant flourish that ends the piece with the assertive and uncompromising sounds of victory.

JEF PENDERS (Hoensbroek 1928) is also a very popular Dutch wind band music composer who also does a great job as conductor, arranger and recording supervisor. In his novelty Glenn meets Wolfgang (1969) he arranged the tune of Mozart's 'Sonate Facile' into the Glenn Miller style. It proved to be a successful formula as this piece was followed by 'Glenn beats the Battle of Jericho', 'Glenn plays after the Ball' and, more recently, 'Glenn mucks about with the clarinet'. The American composer Abe Holzman (New-York, 1874 - East Orange, New Jersey, 1939) worked the greater part of his life as composer and arranger for several music publishing firms. His famous march 'Blaze away' (1901) was inspired by the words of an officer during a naval battle of the Spanish-American War. In 1898 Captain Gridley ordered to open fire against the Spanish fleet in the Bay of Manila with the words 'Well boys let's blaze away!'. This march became extremely popular in the 20th century, also in Europe. Willy Hautvast adapted it to the contemporary European wind band.

The Tower was commisioned by the concert band of Auneau (France), for their 190th anniversary. The composer was inspired by a medieval tower standing in the city and decided to transcribe in music the life in the middle ages, the gregorian chant of the monks, a village festival, the building of the tower, step by step, and then the evocation of the battle of Auneau, one of the famous religious battles of the middle ages in France. The work ends with the regained calm, and the monks singing their gregorian chant at the end of the day.
