£252.10Norsk Festouverture - Johan Halvorsen
The Norwegian Festival Overture was written for the grand opening of the National Theatre on September 1st, 1899. In the opening bars, one can virtually imagine the stage curtain being drawn aside, and the stage is revealed to the audience. The trumpets openly quote Peer Gynts return from Grieg's music to the play Peer Gynt. The main part of the overture consists of a theme in Norwegian folk music style, which Halvorsen brilliantly develops thematically and contrapuntally. The work can probably be seen as pompous and at times seems somewhat overwrought, but then Halvorsen himself, ever so slightly self-deprecating, has written Pomposo over the grand conclusion of the work.The arrangement of the overture was written to The Royal Norwegian Navy Band for a concert in Halvorsen's native town of Drammen in 2016. The arranger has tried to preserve as much as possible of Halvorsen's brilliant orchestration. There are a lot of cue notes which make it possible to perform also with a reduced instrumentation.

The arrangements and compositions in these books were written by Adrian Taylor for various beginner or school bands that he has conducted over the years. Children joined these bands on the 2nd parts, usually having only been playing for a year and they then progressed to the 1st parts the following year.This volume of music was orchestrated a little differently to the other volumes but the easiest parts for each instrument continue to be written without key signatures in treble clef, in B flat major for bass clef trombone and euphonium and in E flat major for bass clef tuba. More advanced parts are written with the appropriate key signatures for each piece, reflecting the greater understanding and skills of the players on these parts. Most of the pieces can be played with only a few parts being covered, the addition of the other parts usually enhancing the arrangement rather than simply doubling existing musical lines. The essential parts are the Trumpet (and Clarinet or Cornet) parts, the two Trombone/Euphonium parts and in No. 4, the 1st Horn part. A piano part helps to fill out the harmonies where other parts are missing. The brass parts in the wind band versions are identical to those in the brass versions. This volume was created so that beginner players can play Calypso and When The Saints, which feature in Just Play... Book 1, accompanied by their school band.

The Spell is a musical interpretation of an old legend from the Alpstein, a mystical mountain area in the east of Switzerland. According to the tale, a shepherd boy, Hennes, cared for his animals on the alpine pastures, but many of the animals fell ill with a terrible plague and died. The mountain spirit appeared to Hennes out of the mists of Sntis and so the story unfolds... The music of The Spell follows the narrative of this legend, in which musical motifs are assigned to the essential elements of the story, a technique seen in late romantic repertoire by composers such as Wagner or Richard Strauss.

When Karl King was conducting circus bands, he would frequently edit his marches so the same composition could be used for contrasting acts (for example a lion act one time, and a trapeze act the next). In the same spirit, Thomas Leslie has creatively repurposed this familiar march to suit an imaginary clown act; complete with novelty percussion sounds and a few surprises sprinkled in. Symphonic Overture is a contemporary-sounding overture of medium difficulty so scored that it can be performed with equal success by large and small groups alike. Employing the familiar three-part form (A-B-A), the opening section has a theme which is robust in character and with considerable rhythmic interest. The second theme, slow and expressive in character is a free form based on an opening idea introduced by the first flute. At the return of the first section, the first theme is treated as a fugue subject building to great heights as all four entrances are achieved. As the exposition concludes, the contrapuntal texture gives way to a homophonic quality which closes the piece.The coda, as is characteristic, utilizes material from the first theme.
