The year 2004 marked the 100th anniversary of the death of Antonin Dvorak. In 1879 Dvorak wrote this Polonaise as a commission for the committee organising the festivities for their famous national dance festival. Many famous Czech composers wrote dances specially for this event. This Polonaise in three movements, with its fine melody lines, deserves to be more than just an occasional work, however. This lively, attractive march originates from one of the best-known operettas by Franz Lehar, Die lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow), a work that brought the composer enormous success. The operetta features many lovely arias, and catchy dances, but also subtle passages and wonderful singable tunes. One of those is Ja, das Studium der Weiber ist schwer (The study of women is difficult), a tune incorporated in the trio of this march. Lehar obviously had high expectations for it, giving it a prominent place within the operetta. He also used it as an effective finale piece.Duration: 3:15

Czardas - Léo Delibes
French composer Lo Delibes (1836-1891) was primarily known for his operettas and short comic operas. He was also famous for the ballet Coppelia from which arranger Wil van der Beek has transcribed the czardas for concert band. Characteristic of this work and the music of Delibes' in general are rhythmic, alternating melodies. Another trademark of Delibes' work is the skilful choice of instrumentation, a facet which this transcription honors thoroughly.The piece is a succession of the various themes the composer uses to work towards a brilliant climax.

In 1906 Bohemian violinist and composer Frantisek Drdla (1868-1944) composed the delightfully charming piece entitled Souvenir. This piece for violin and piano is one of the most popular compositions by Drdla. Wil van der Beek has produced this arrangement for Flute and Concert Band which remains faithful to the original version.
