Skillfully combining four distinctive melodies from the early-American "shape-note" hymnal The Sacred Harp, Timothy Broege has created a wonderful single-movement setting for band that includes many moods andstyles. "Pilgrim" and "Traveler" form the principal themes of the piece and undergo a series of variations. "Aylesbury" and "Jefferson" are used as transitional melodies and arecombined with the other two as the music becomes increasingly complex and contrapuntal. Alfred Evensen (1883 - 1942) was born in Troms, but moved to Harstad 16 years old to start as a student at The Military School of Music. He was director and chief of the military band in 1918, and worked there for 12 years. In 1930 he was appointedto conductor of the military band in Bergen, and worked there until he was appointed to take over from Johannes Hanssen (Valdres march) as manager and conductor of the military band in Oslo in 1934.With this band he participated in a majorinternational military music collection in Paris in 1935 With a great success. In addition to his work in military music, he was a highly respected conductor of choir and composed, in additionto his compositions for bands, many songs for choir.He died in Oslo, after he was arrested because of his resistance against the German occupation. At his own request he was buried in Harstad, and there is also a statue of him.Norwegian Dance No. 1 and No. 2 dates from 1911 and 1912respectively. They are composed in the style of Grieg's Norwegian Dances, Op. 35, but, unlike Grieg, Evensen has used his own themes for the compositions.

Jericho is the musical translation of the well-known story from the book of Joshua about the capture of the city of Jericho by the Israelites.Part 1 depicts the cruel journey through the desert to Canaan, the promised land. An emotional lamentation for the yearning for a home, for the end of a roaming existence.The capture of Jericho is the theme of part 2. The city cannot be captured immediately and Jehovah orders an impressive army to march around the city for six days. On the seventh day, they marched around the city seven times and the priests blew their trumpets and the people cried so loud that the walls of Jericho came tumbling down. The Jews stormed the city and drove theinhabitants away. The music clearly reveals the marching army and you can hear the walls falling down with a tremendous noise. However, there is quite some artistic freedom in the actual story.A majestic and grand melody subsequently evokes the triumphant emotions that emerged as the fortified city fell (part 3).Following a personal and romantic interpretation, the scene ultimately ends in a typical Jewish feast (part 4) whereby the virtuosity of melodies played by the woodwinds and the passionate rhythms refer to traditional Jewish music. All themes are repeated in this last part in various forms, often simultaneous and in duelling counterpoint. The piece ends with fragments from the main theme of part 1 in major: peace and quiet return at last.
