Spirited Away - Joe Hisaishi
This is an arrangement of Ghibli's Anime film, "Spirited Away". It consists of six themes including No-Face, One Summer Day, The Bottomless Pit, Yubaba's Panic, Always with Me, and Reprise. I also added an alternate introduction using The Dragon Boy. The No-Face opener is somewhat avant-garde with technical difficulties so select the opening that is best suited to your ensemble. The arrangement concept was created by Mr. Tomoki Ubata of Ina Gakuen Sr. High School. His wonderfully crafted ideas always impress me. Especially, in the arrangement, mallet percussion and piano are effectively used to sound like a music box and the lyrical melody of Reprise is superimposed. This scene is the best part of the entire arrangement and is very emotional. All these fine melodies from the film transport both audience and performers to the fantastic world of anime. Utopia is the name of a book written by the English author Thomas More and was published in 1516. The title is a word thought up by More himself, after the Greek language, meaning "Nowhereland" and leading to the invention of the words utopian scheme and utopian. Utopia pictured an ideal state on an island far from the inhabited world. This idea was the basis of the composition. It makes one think of Oregon in variety of themes and style. Utopia also exists of a combination of styles that breathe the atmosphere of film music. However, Utopia sounds less American. The slow and stirring middle part for example is closer to the European romanticism: the chord signals in the brasssection remind of Wagner's music.

£264.99Pome Montagnard - Jan Van der Roost
Jan Van der Roost received the commission for this work from the 'Orchestre d'Harmonie du Val d'Aoste' and dedicated the composition to Lino Blanchod, the conductor of the orchestra. The first performance was on 26th January 1997 by the orchestra itself and under the direction of the composer. This extensive symphonic poem depicts the atmosphere and history of the autonomous French speaking region 'Val d'Aoste' in northern Italy, and is meant as a musical homage to the historical figure Cathrine de Challant.The opening of this piece describes the rugged nature of this region dominated by Mont Blanc, the roof of Europe. A brief, combative passage conjures up the numerous warsfought here through the ages, later expanding into a surprising 'Renaissance Dance' with an original and fitting recorder quartet. A broad, lyrical theme portrays the love that has always played an important role here. After recapturing several of the earlier themes, the piece closes with the renaissance dance, this time played by the brass. A spectacular finale brings this symphonic poem to a close.

As the title suggests, this is a fiery and energetic, dynamic overture. Jan Van der Roost was commissioned to write the piece by the Japanese 'Band of the NEC-Tamagawa Plant' on the occasion of its 40th anniversary. From the first measure, the brass section sets the scene with rhythmical motives. Gradually we hear melodic and playful themes, often supported by (poly)rhythmic figures. A fermate in the trombone section prepares the way for the final theme, which virtuosically leads into a reprise of the first fanfare. The dynamic circle closes!

Paso Bella is full of the typical fiery and melodic characteristics of the paso doble. The hot Spanish temperament can be heard from the opening themes in the minor key, as is usual in a paso doble, to the last bars of the trio. The trio is followed by an exuberant closing which will reverberate in the ears of both musicians and audience for a long time.

This expressive piece depicts three periods that play an important role in the history of the American state of Virginia, the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes.The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. This is followed by a illustration of the Civil War, heralded by ceremonial figures from the brass section. The work is brought to a close with a slow but optimistic theme heralding hope for the future.

With its hopeful melodies and triumphant parts in the brass section, the opening pictures the dawning of a new era of great expectations, characterized by the high speed of communicating all over the world, which is one of the most important aspects of life in the 21st century. This is achieved by musical themes being rapidly transferred from one musician to another. In this vortex of information and fast business transactions, the sense of individuality threatens to become extinct. At this point, Brosse silences the orchestra (a symbol of society) and draws attention to those peoplewho are less fortunate than most of us. This focus on other people culminates with an orchestral climax in which all powers come together with a feeling of euphoria.

The Hida High School is in a highland city called Takayama in Gifu Prefecture. Takayama City has some of the highest mountains in Japan, atmospheric rows of houses and streets, and a beautiful landscape. The magnificent views from these mountains can be described as a paradise above the clouds. When the composer visited there in the summer of 2001, the lovely flowers spreading through the valley and the refreshing air welcomed him. The flowers looked as if they were fashionably dressed and fully enjoying conversation and a short summer at a reunion party. The composer was inspired by this scenery to compose this piece. The musical party opens with happy greetings of a reunion andjoyful themes follow one after another. A light xylophone solo, a waltz and an adagio featuring alternate solos by alto saxophone, euphonium and trumpet lead to a brilliant finale featuring brass and percussion played in irregular time. A beautiful musical picture that your band will enjoy performing for many years.
