Summer Nights (French Horn Solo with Concert Band - Score only) - Ellerby, Martin

Six Vignettes for Solo Horn and Concert BandThis 'song-cycle', featuring a solo horn, is based on the same set of poems that inspired Berlioz's Les Nuits d'Ete. The original song cycle is essentially dark, encapsulated by movements of a more lively and positive nature and the essence of this approach has been maintained in this contemporary work: Villanelle; The Ghost of the Rose; On the Lagoons; Absence; At the Cemetery; The Unknown Isle.Performance time 16'15"Recorded on QPRM146D,The Year of the Dragon, Royal Northern College of Music Concert BandF Horn Solo & Piano Accompaniment edition available separately

Roman Times (Concert Band - Score Only) - Fraser, Bruce

During a visit to the town of Saintes in South West France in the summer of 2003, I spent some time in the Roman amphitheatre there. It is a well preserved arena and I imagined what it must have been like to take part in the gladiatorial games. 'Roman times' is based on these images with the opening grand procession and its amazing mixture of Mediterranean peoples. The middle movement is an old fashioned love ballad followed by gladiators fighting in a very spirited battle to death or victory.

Joyeuse Marche (Concert Band - Score Only) - Brand, Geoffrey

In spite of displaying remarkable musical gifts Chabrier (1841-1894) was sent by his father to study law and in due course, having taken a law degree, went to work in his native French Ministry of the Interior, stay there for eighteen years. During the whole of this time he was developing his real interests in music and painting, including composing operettas and music for the piano. Following a holiday in Spain in 1883, Chabrier wrote a rhapsody for orchestra based on Spanish tunes he had heard. This became Espana; it achieved immediate acclaim and is still his most performed work. Joyeuse Marche (originally called Marche Francaise) was written in 1888. It exudes Chabrier's rhythmical exuberance, spontaneity and wit, bringing pleasure and joy to performers and listeners alike. Truly a march which lives up to its title.

Music for Arosa (Concert Band - Score only) - Sparke, Philip

This work was commissioned in 1996 by the Arosa Cultural committee and first performed in Arosa in that year. The majestic introduction opens with trombones and euphonium, heralding a legato theme, chorale-like in character. A pair of flutes introduce a new theme. A trumpet introduces a series of highly syncopated solos, which feature many metre changes, and the tempo increases when playful motifs are exchanged between various sections of the band. A solo clarinet introduces an expressive tune. A brass chorale follows, with interruptions from the flute and bassoon, until the clarinet tune is played by the whole band. This reaches a climax and the mood subsides to reach a quiet horn chord. The broad legato tune returns and the excitement increases until the march theme triumphantly returns to full band. This leads to the coda which is based on the opening fanfare and closes the work emphatically. (Grade 5) Performance time 11'01" (Recorded on QPRM138D BREAKING THE CENTURY, Central Band of the Royal Air Force)

Avebury Circles (Concert Band - Score Only) - Brand, Michael

The Avebury Circles in Wiltshire (England) are even more spectacular than Stonehenge. They are thought to date from the same time. Who knows what they symbolized or what rituals were performed there? Brand, Michael's piece imagines a misty dawn as the sun rises over the shaped stones, followed by a robed ceremony, a sacrifice and finally a dance.

Panache (Concert Band - Score Only) - Fraser, Bruce

The work has a military feel in the opening fanfare, but settles down to an angular melody with frequent changes in time signature. The middle section should be played expressively and maintain a good flow. The speed of the Allegro is most likely to be determined by the agility of the trombone section in the unison running quavers. There is the possibility of adding extra drummers near the end - a drum corps was used behind the Band in the first performance making a stunning effect.

New World Dances (Concert Band - Score only) - Ellerby, Martin

Cast in three short movements the work endeavours to recreate the pioneering spirit of the journey across America (the then 'New World') as this vast continent was opened up and its wonders exposed. The three dance episodes that make up the suite are symbolic in an analogous sense to this 'reaching' principle: the first - Earth Dance - is a vigorous overture, pushing out the frontiers; the interlude - Moon Dance - contemplates the huge distances to be crossed and Sun Dance represents the realisation of the American dream, rhythmic and full of energy. Written in affectionate tribute to America and its people, New World Dances was rather symbolically completed on July 4th!Grade 6Performance time 8'45"Recorded on QPRM134D The Kings Go Forth, Central Band of the Royal Air Force

Sinfonietta No.2 (Concert Band - Score only) - Sparke, Philip

Commissioned by the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and first performed by them on 6th August 1992.1. Overture: VivaceA bustling opening movement in sonata form. After an introduction in which a syncopated theme is tossed around the band, the first subject proper gives way to a more legato second theme. A scherzando bridge passage leads to the recapitulation.2. Serenade: Lento ExpressivoA short introduction leads to a sonorous theme from the middle of the band. A slightly more rhythmic central 5/8 section leads to a short cadenza-like duet for two alto saxes which reintroduces the opening of the movement.3. Finale: Molto VivaceA fast and furious finale which fails to settle long enough for a real theme to develop as motivic ideas are thrown from player to player. Eventually a violently syncopated tune emerges from the middle of the band but this is interrupted by a reflective interlude. In time the faster music returns and the movement hurtles to a close.Duration: 16.10Recorded on QPRM124D MIGHTY VOICE, Great British Music for Wind Band Vol.3
