In this moderately easy suite, Jan Van der Roost uses four authentic folk tunes from the Swedish-speaking part of Finland. These are from Nagu, Oravais, Lappfjrd and Karlebynejden, and have been joined together without pauses to form a continuous suite. The work begins with noble, almost meditative melodies. Gradually the tempo becomes faster, resulting in a brilliant and cheerful folk dance. The melody regularly goes from one band section to another ensuring that the timbre remains varied and there is no question of monotony. Right from the outset until the very end, the speed, energy and "drive" of the tuneful music is palpable. It's abundantly clear why the title "Seatbelts Fastened!" was chosen: just like an airplane, this music takes off and neither tempo nor intensity are lost throughout the flight. Descending and ascending scales characterise the most important thematic material and the music explores a variety of different registers through Van der Roost utilising a great deal of different tonalities and metres. Please keep your seatbelts fastened and enjoy the flight!

This short opening music was composed on commission of the symphonic band of Jan Van der Roost's village (= Kontich near Antwerp / Belgium). In 1991, this community band celebrated its 100th anniversary. After composing commissioned pieces from different countries (even from Japan), this was the most 'near' commission he ever received indeed!It is a short but varied piece, featuring all sections of the band. After a short introduction, played by the brass instruments, a crisp rhythm starts and boxes the main theme. After a second theme, played by brass and percussion, a short melodical passage brings some 'rest'. At the end, the fanfare of the introductionreoccurs.Although this "Centennial Prelude" isn't a really demanding piece, it sounds colourful and energetic. It has been recorded on CD by the band of the 'Royal Dutch Airforce' and the 'Desford Colliery Brass band'.

Arsenal was composed for the 50th anniversary of the 'Harmonie van het Spoorwegarsenaal' [railroad arsenal], based in Mechelen (Belgium). Rather a stately concert march, it has beautiful themes and a broad melody in the trio. It waspremiered in the Mechelen Cultural Center on the 11th of May 1996 during the solemn ceremony, opening the anniversary year and conducted by the composer. In the meantime, Arsenal has been recorded several times by such renowed performers likethe Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, the Black Dyke BB etc.
