2011 was a disastrous year for Japan: on March 11 the northeast of the country suffered a violent earthquake, which triggered a huge tsunami and caused massive damage to people and the environment. The ensuing problems with the nuclear reactor at Fukushima only increased the misery: a black day in the country's history... One almost inevitable consequence of such dramatic circumstances is the particular damage suffered by the cultural arts. And so it was in Japan: various high school wind orchestras in the effected areas lost their practice rooms and/or instruments. It will take a long time before the damage suffered is repaired - and it will take great effort to overcome the psychological effects, too. Focusing on the latter, Yutada Nishida (director of The Bandwagon radio program) asked a few composers for a simple work that could be played by many orchestras. It just so happened that the Osakan Philharmonic Winds (with whom Jan Van der Roost had conducted a concert exclusively of his own works on September 25th) had had a similar idea. This concert saw the baptism of Song of Hope. This piece immediately struck a chord with musicians and audience alike: it begins bleakly in the low register and evolves to a more open, optimistic close. The twofold title of this concert work is directly connected with the band who commissioned it. The 'Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacher' - from the town of the same name, by the river Moselle in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg - was founded in the year 1834. The name Machera is derived from the word machara, which in turn originated from maceries (old wall). Later, Machera evolved into Machern, Grafenmachern, and finally Grevenmacher. In 2009, this music society - the third oldest still in existence in the country - celebrated its 175th anniversary. And after all these years the society still flourishes! The dynamic committee, led by Georges May, fully supports and inspires the musical leader of the band, Claude Weiland, as well as his 60-strong ensemble. This well-functioning team took the initiative to ask Jan Van der Roost to write an anniversary composition, inspired, on the one hand, by the rural character of Grevenmacher and its surroundings (where the famous Moselle wine growing dominates the countryside), and on the other hand, by the dynamics, creativity and joie de vivre the band exudes. All of this resulted in a twofold work with alternating peace and excitement, virtuous and melodic features, orchestral splendour and soberly orchestrated passages. The premire, on 10 January 2010, was conducted by the composer himself at a successful gala concert which brought a fine year full of musical festivities to a close. The 'Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacher' faces the future with confidence, and will now prepare for its next milestone: the 200th anniversary!Duration: 11:00

The Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten-Innsbruck (Austria) invited Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost to write a work to mark the bicentenary of the Tyrolean fight for freedom, which was settled in 1809. Various musical elements reflect this historical event. First, a hymn-like section rings out, based on melodic fragments from the 'Tiroler Landeshymne' (by Leopold Knebelsberger), which intertwine in a counterpoint-like arrangement. The second passage is more bellicose in character, and mirrors the fight of the Tyroleans - under the inspiring leadership of freedom fighter Andreas Hofer (1767-1810) - against Bavarian, French and Italian troops. Next, a broad, chorale-style melody appears again: here, the imposing beauty of nature in Tyrol, and the amiable, lively temperament of the people who live in this mountainous region, are glorified.This is neither a programmatic work around an historical reconstruction, nor a politically inspired work: it is a combination of factual and cultural components, with an artistic and sonorous character. The use of the flugelhorn in particular gives Tirol Terra Fortis its 'couleur locale': for this beautiful instrument can invariably be found in the Austrian wind band. The commissioning music society had therefore specifically asked the composer to incorporate the instrument in this work. It certainly enhances the already extensive colour palette of the modern concert band!Duration: 11:00

In contrast to the sombre, joyless tone such a memory usually invokes, it is a rather cheerful work that reflects the innocence and light heartedness of a child. It does open in a serious mood, but quickly becomes more energetic and turns into a dance. Adagio for Winds is similar in atmosphere to the well-known Canterbury Chorale (also by Jan Van der Roost), in that it has no exaggerated melodrama, but rather a melodically wide and expressive approach. The work is full of beautiful lyrical melodies and the warm harmony and the full orchestration give the audience and the band the chance to give their thoughts free reign in a contemplative atmosphere. Minerva by Jan Van der Roost was composed on the commission of the German "Musikverein Braunshausen" on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the orchestra. The composition, first performed on September 17, 1999, is not a street march but a concert march, just like Mercury and Arsenal. The use and variation of different rhythmic patterns gives the first part of this march a distinctly dynamic character. Two main themes are presented in several instrumental combinations. The theme from the trio, on the other hand, is characterized by a broad melodic approach using large intervals. This theme, wreathed by high woodwinds, is heard one more time after a contrasting new part, but now in a somewhat slower tempo. The counterpoint in this part refers to the first part of the march. The brilliant ending suits a festive anniversary march!Duration: 4:00

As the title suggests, this is a fiery and energetic, dynamic overture. Jan Van der Roost was commissioned to write the piece by the Japanese 'Band of the NEC-Tamagawa Plant' on the occasion of its 40th anniversary. From the first measure, the brass section sets the scene with rhythmical motives. Gradually we hear melodic and playful themes, often supported by (poly)rhythmic figures. A fermate in the trombone section prepares the way for the final theme, which virtuosically leads into a reprise of the first fanfare. The dynamic circle closes!Duration: 6:45

This traditional melody is known worldwide as a song of farewell. Jan Van der Roost treated it as an anthem in this splendid arrangement. The melody is brought to us in whole or in part by various instruments and is surrounded by logical yet original - sometimes surprising - chords that dare to fluctuate. After a broad tutti, the ensemble begins to die out. The piece ends with an impressive diminuendo of the final chord, almost as if the orchestra itself were saying goodbye.Duration: 3:50

Jan Van der Roost received the commission for this work from the Orchestre d'Harmonie du Val d'Aoste and dedicated the composition to Lino Blanchod, the conductor of the orchestra. The first performance was on 26th January 1997 by the orchestra itself and under the direction of the composer. This extensive symphonic poem depicts the atmosphere and history of the autonomous French speaking region Val d'Aoste in northern Italy, and is meant as a musical homage to the historical figure Catherine de Challant. The opening of this piece describes the rugged nature of this region dominated by Mont Blanc, the roof of Europe. A brief, combative passage conjures up the numerous wars fought here through the ages, later expanding into a surprising 'Renaissance Dance' with an original and fitting recorder quartet. A broad, lyrical theme portrays the love that has always played an important role here. After recapturing several of the earlier themes, the piece closes with the renaissance dance, this time played by the brass. A spectacular finale brings this symphonic poem to a close.Duration: 18:30
