Finn McCool - Robert Buckley

Finn McCool (Fionn mac Cumhaill) was a mythical Irish giant. There are many stories associated with Finn, including the legend that he built the Giant's Causeway in the north of Ireland as stepping-stones to Scotland. Finn McCool starts as a funky Irish jig with an infectious groove and a call and response structure. This develops into a section with a melody reminiscent of an Irish air. Finally, these two melodies are played together and the music builds to a final flourish.

Finnish Folk Song Suite - Jan Van der Roost

In this moderately easy suite, Jan Van der Roost uses four authentic folk tunes from the Swedish-speaking part of Finland. These are from Nagu, Oravais, Lappfjrd and Karlebynejden, and have been joined together without pauses to form a continuous suite. The work begins with noble, almost meditative melodies. Gradually the tempo becomes faster, resulting in a brilliant and cheerful folk dance. The melody regularly goes from one band section to another ensuring that the timbre remains varied and there is no question of monotony. This is an attractive suite which is within the range of the majority of concert bands.

Fire! is an intense and exciting concert piece that is quite accessible for intermediate bands. It employs a large percussion section offering interesting colors and rhythms.

Fire & Ice - Otto M. Schwarz

Otto M. Schwarz composed Fire & Ice for a symphonic rock project commissioned by the national music schools of the Austrian cities of Imst and Pitztal. In these cities, winter tourism plays an important role in the economy with spectacular weekly displays by winter sportsmen and women. The performances of the freestyle acrobats take place in the evening and draw huge crowds. Using torches and other pyrotechnics, these acrobats entertain the audience by means of fire, lights, snow, ice and acrobatics. This piece makes a perfect opening or final work for any concert. It will especially be a favourite among younger audience members.

Fire and Fury - Randy Navarre

The opening of this composition starts with a bit of dissonance and quickly moves to more traditional harmonies. It is not a hard dissonant work. The main idea of this composition for the teacher is to drill in the dotted quarter/eighth note rhythm. Everyone plays this rhythm many times. It has contrasting melodies and plays in both major and minor modes. 1st trumpet's highest note is D. Only the 1st clarinets play above the break.
