The Curse of the Mermaid - Thomas Doss

The Curse of the Mermaid tells the story of a greedy and wealthy fisherman wanting to make money in any way possible. When his business starts to fail, he puts the blame on the mermaids. One day, the fisherman kills a mermaid, who casts a spell on him shortly before she disappears into the water. The composition is in the form of a symphonic poem, starting slow and then mysteriously opening up revealing a fantastic colourful world of sounds and motion. There are various moments during the piece where the composer includes broad and beautiful melodic material, as well as surprising effects and great rhythmical interest. The Cycle - Peter Sciaino

The Cycle is a sonic interpretation of social anxiety. Chromatic themes are used to create a manic texture while rhythmic intensity and frenetic melodies throughout give this work a tense, anxious feeling. Composer Peter Scianio writes "The Cycle was written to offer a sonic interpretation of this disorder with the hope that, through greater understanding, an open dialogue can be made available to youth and adults who deal with this everyday."

The Dance - Robert W. Smith

Inspired by the paintings of impressionist Henri Matisse and featuring the alto saxophone, "The Dance" is the first movement of "Three Conversations With Matisse." Along with the well known Matisse painting of the same name, this unique musical statement can be described as forbidding, menacing, tribal and ritualistic. Written for the accomplished saxophone soloist, the band accompaniment is well within the technical range of most high school, university and community ensembles. A powerful and welcome addition to the saxophone and concert band repertoire!
