Farallones

Farallones is inspired by the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary (GFNMS) off the Northern California coast. Farallones (Spanish for "cliffs") are a set of islands sometimes referred to as The Devil's Teeth by mariners - citing the many dangerous underwater shoals and shipwrecks. The opening section in 7/4 depicts the rugged environment around the islands. Descending scalar motifs and trills emphasize the fluidity of the seascape. The 12/8 section is a development depicting the resilience and dangerous beauty of the area.

Feature Syncopation - Davide Pedrazzini

An energetic and syncopated piece with a lyrical contrasting section. At one point, all musicians perform body percussion, accompanied by the percussion section, creating a theatrical and engaging moment. Perfect for young bands, it combines rhythmic training with an entertaining performance for players and audiences alike.

Robert Thurston's enormously attractive writing for band and his sure command of contemporary harmonic and rhythmic devices give this three movement composition by terrific band and audience appeal. Thurston's fondness for mixed meters will keep players on their toes. The 2nd movement (moderato) in particular has a memorable folk-like lilt and charm. The whole piece is bound together by the use of the motto C-E-C, the initials of the composer's teacher, the late great band writer Charles E. Carter, in whose memory Festive Dances was written. Fire and Fury - Randy Navarre

The opening of this composition starts with a bit of dissonance and quickly moves to more traditional harmonies. It is not a hard dissonant work. The main idea of this composition for the teacher is to drill in the dotted quarter/eighth note rhythm. Everyone plays this rhythm many times. It has contrasting melodies and plays in both major and minor modes. 1st trumpet's highest note is D. Only the 1st clarinets play above the break.
