A Joyful Noise - Steven Rosenhaus

"A Joyful Noise" was originally commissioned for 2 F horns. The title comes from Psalm 100, which begins (in English) "Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!" In early 2022, composer Steven Rosenhaus followed up on a suggestion to make the music, originally for two horns and organ, available to more musicians; he rescored it for two euphoniums or trombones and band, changing nothing substantial except transposing the work to better fit the new ensemble. Though the 1st trumpet's highest note is G and the range of the instruments stay pretty much within the range of a grade 3, the composition is quite syncopated, thus moving its grade level to a 4. This is a great work to explore these rhythms while staying within an accessible range for your band.

This swamp wolf man from Cajun folklore is largely used as a children's tale to inspire obedience, though it can be seen as a force for good. This edgy and eerie composition presents the loup-garou as a misunderstood monster or a tragic protagonist.

A New Horizon was composed for the 2021 University of Mobile High School Honor Band during its most challenging season in memory, and contains dynamic swells, subito changes, and crisp articulations. The title of this joyful, upbeat piece is a reminder that hope remains and we should keep our eyes on the future: a new horizon.

A Walk in the Park

A Walk in the Park was composed for Walter Avenllaneda's John F. Kennedy High School Band. This composition features dynamic brass, sustained chords, sweeping & energetic woodwind lines, and a recurring three-note motif, in addition to the the intuitive musical phrasing for which Strommen is known. The vibrant fast sections are contrasted by a waltz in the middle of the piece, which is then followed by a wonderfully bold ending.

Abalone Sunset

Abalone Sunset captures a glimpse of evening hours at the beach. Written in such a way as to inspire confidence in intermediate players, optional solo opportunities are marked in several instruments. Within the harmony, there are several instances of tension (dissonance) within the sound canvas, expressing the glow of soft color and changing light as the sun sets over a stunning ocean scene.

Academic Festival March

Academic Festival March features a range of textures, dynamics, and articulation while highlighting a stately dotted eighthnote motive throughout. Strong homophonic presentations of the main theme are balanced with antiphonal play between the upper and lower voices. Though written primarily in Bb Major, a short minor modulation will stretch your students to explore different finger patterns. This courtly march provides students with ample learning opportunities and paths to success, making it the perfect "academic festival" or contest opener.
