Farallones

Farallones is inspired by the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary (GFNMS) off the Northern California coast. Farallones (Spanish for "cliffs") are a set of islands sometimes referred to as The Devil's Teeth by mariners - citing the many dangerous underwater shoals and shipwrecks. The opening section in 7/4 depicts the rugged environment around the islands. Descending scalar motifs and trills emphasize the fluidity of the seascape. The 12/8 section is a development depicting the resilience and dangerous beauty of the area.

Inspired by the fire towers that are a feature of many National Parks and forests throughout the United States and the lookouts who man them, this powerful piece begins with a majestic theme in C minor that will dominate its course. A contrasting Allegro idea featuring repeated notes, a striking percussion "break" and a subtle use of syncopated rhythms help propel this notable election to an exciting conclusion.

Flaming Arrow

Flaming Arrow is written for beginning band, and uses only the first six notes learned in most beginning band methods: Bb to G. The piece is cast in C minor; consequently, an alternate trombone part is provided that does not reach out to sixth position. Beginning with mysterious opening material that is used later in the work, the piece then moves to an aggressive up-tempo section with lots of percussion. This is followed by a return of the slow opening material and a gradual accelerando with the sound of tom-toms. The piece ends with a short coda for an energetic conclusion.
