In 1958, Domenico Modugno (1928-1994) song Nel blu dipinto di blu (or Volare) was the Italian entry at the Eurovision Song Contest. Modugno did not win the contest (he became third) but the song - a true sing-along - turned out to be a worldwide hit. In the course of decades, Volare has been translated into various languages, and performed by many artists of repute, like The Gipsy Kings, Dean Martin, Louis Armstrong, Petula Clark, and David Bowie. Another fabulous arrangement from Adrian Taylor of popular tunes for Junior Wind Ensemble. It is not necessary to have all parts being played for these arrangements. Most will work fine with just the two Trumpet/Clarinet parts and a bass line from trombones, tubas or bassoons. With the exception of the bassoon part, all instruments have a part 1 (more advanced and with key signatures) and a part 2 (easier music, lower notes, rarely crossing the break for woodwind players, and without key signatures for treble clef instruments). A piano part is included to help fill out the harmonies for smaller groups.

Three contrasting movements comprise the work: i. Processional (Personent hodie - On this day earth shall ring) This is a short piece imagining a torchlight Yuletide procession (perhaps bearing the traditional roasted wild boar), using a well-known Christmas melody from the large collection of music compiled in the 16th century called Piae Cantiones (1582). The tune is presented twice with accompanying, related melodic material. ii. Pastorale (Quem pastores laudavere - Shepherds sang their praises o'er him) This is a 14th-century melody which was originally collected by Michael Praetorius at the end of the 16th-century. The treatment throughout is very lyrical without overly complex harmonies. The melody is heard three times with brief linking episodes and a short coda. iii. Celebration! (In dulci jubilo - In sweet celebration - Ding-dong merrily on high) This magnificent 13th-century melody was also a part of Michael Praetorius's collection. It is traditionally associated with the words 'Good Christian men, rejoice!' The opening is a straight transcription of the great chorale prelude for organ by J.S. Bach. After the grandeur of the opening, the tune is heard in more of a 'folky' style. A lot of related melodic material is then presented before the tune Ding-dong merrily on high is heard. After another episode of previously used music In dulci jubilo reappears in a joyful conclusion to the piece. A magnificent major work based on the German chorale 'Was Lebet' (O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness). The piece is made up of five contrasting variations. A majestic, fanfare-like section opens the work, leading into a giocoso classical-style variation. The beautiful Variation 2 is reflective and plaintive, while the next variation is somewhat quirky and volatile in nature. There is a French romantic feel to Variation 4, with a playful waltz providing scope for various soloists around the band to display their musicianship. Variation 5 is fugal in nature, with each section of the band being handed the theme at various points. The sense of motion builds gradually to a grandiose presentation of the theme, the first time that it is heard in its full form, bringing the work to a thrilling, majestic conclusion. *Please note audio and video are of the brass band version. Tara's Theme Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
Max Steiner was born in Vienna in 1888, and grew up surrounded by music. He was a student of the Imperial Academy of Music, having among his teachers Gustav Mahler. In 1936 he signed an agreement with Warner. Steiner, considered the father of symphonic music in Hollywood style. One of his most famous and popular masterworks is, without any doubt, Gone with the Wind (1939). The movie was an immediate success and won ten Academy Awards. In spite of the years passed, this movie still moves young audiences around the world. Lorenzo Bocci has chosen the song Tara's Theme from this movie and turned the romantic music into an arrangement for concert band. 0:03:50

Premiered by the University of Kansas Symphonic Band with Robert E. Foster conducting, this work was presented the 1982 Neil A. Kjos Memorial Award for the most significant contribution to wind band music. It consists of three movements: an "Elegia" in sonata form, "Variazioni Interrotte" (Interrupted Variations), and a "Finale" in classic sonata form concluding in a coda which ends the symphony in a final, dramatic, colorful outburst, the sort of pure musical energy that only a modern symphonic band can produce.
