Arctic Funk might just as well have been a flashing sequel to a scene from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story. Popular music but with a difference, as indicated by the title. The work's quiet section temporarily soothes down the heated passion of its two corner movements, but everywhere else action is required throughout. The work was commissioned in 1991 by Troms? Brass. Situated just above the Polar Circle, Troms? is one of Norway's northernmost towns. Topographically, the town probably comes across as freezing cold, but Troms? is famous for its 'warm' night-life. In 2006 Brabant will be celebrating it's 900th anniversary. On May 13th 1106 the count Van Leuven was appointed duke of Brabant. This was the birth of the duchy of Brabant. For centuries this duchy, situated in the heart of the Netherlands, was the primary of the seventeen provinces in the Lowlands. Brabant formed with it's capital cities Brussels, Leuven, Antwerp and 's-Hertogenbosch the focal point for politics, culture and economy. The revolution against Spain (1566-1648) caused a fracture between the North and South. The old duchy was divided into a Dutch and Belgian part. Even though each had their own historical background, the bond forged in the past was partially kept alive. To this day we still have a duke of Brabant. Brabantia Aeterna takes you on a musical journey through 900 years of Brabant history. A fascinating journey portraying war and peace, love and grief, prosperity and adversity, development and deterioration. Listen to how monks chanted, bells tolled and churches were built. Or take the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries with their bustling markets, builders of cities or the bleating of countless sheep across the heather. The plague, tribulations, soldiers and political bickering in the following centuries. Goethe's Faust has already been set to music by various renowned musicians, such as Berlioz, Busoni and Spohr, and indeed Charles Gounod, who built his eponymous opera around the tale. Gounod's Faust is primarily known for its lovely melodies and its beautifully expressive vocal parts and subtle orchestrations. Introduction - The introduction is presented in the form of a fanfare; it heralds the ceremony in a majestic way. II. March - The marching music leads to an expressive and delicate melody that contrasts with the other movements.III. Dance and finale - A dance concludes the ceremony. Cobra Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
Shortly after the Second World War, a combative movement of Danish, Belgian and Dutch artists chose the cobra snake - extremely dangerous yet considered sacred - as a symbol of their resistance to strict guideliness of form. The name "Cobra" also happens to contain the first letters of the cities Copenhagen, Brussels ans Amsterdam, from where most of the movement's members came. The Cobra movement, which existed from November 1948 until November 1951, can with some justicication be called the last major avant-garde movement of the 20th century.The source of inspiration for the composition Cobra comes from four paintings: "Obhobning" by the Dane Egill Jacobsen; "La jeune fille et la mort" by the Belgian Pierre Alechinsky; "Orgeldraaier" and "Le rythme joyeux de la ville" by the Dutch artists Karel Appel and Corneille. Obhobning means "pile-up", which is represented musically in the first part by a melodic and harmonic pilling up of perfect fourth's. The first part is also characterized by a rhythmic feeling, which the painting gives through its use of numerous black stripes. In the painting La jeune fille et la mort, Pierre Alechinsky places a young girl opposite Death. The second part features the constantly pulsating motion of live while a creeping, dark, melodic line develops. The tension between life and death is tangible as a battle reveals itself. In part three, one hears the Orgeldraaier by Karel Appel, as cheerful and playful as an organ grinder's music. The painting Le rythme joyeux de la ville by Corneille is busy and extremely dynamic, a perfect source of inspiration for a powerful, rhythmic ending to this composition. 0:09:57
