What Child Is This? is a Christmas carol whose lyrics were written by William Chatterton Dix, in 1865. At the time of composing the carol, Dix worked as an insurance company manager and had been struck by a severe illness. While recovering, he underwent a spiritual renewal that led him to write several hymns, including lyrics to this carol that was subsequently set to the tune of Greensleeves, a traditional English folk song. Although it was written in Great Britain, the carol is more popular in the United States than in its country of origin today. The context of the carol centres around the Adoration of the Shepherds, who visited Jesus during his Nativity. The questions posed in the lyrics reflect what the shepherds were possibly pondering to themselves when they encountered him, with the rest of the carol providing a response to their questions. This arrangement represents one in the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.

The protagonist, Daniel Sempere, is the teenage son of an antiquarian book dealer, who one day takes him to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a mysterious place with labyrinthine corridors where rare and banned books are stacked in massive dusty piles. His father tells Daniel to select a book, but it will be his responsibility to protect it. Daniel picks La Sombra del Viento (The Shadow of the Wind), a novel by a forgotten author Julin Carax. Daniel immediately starts reading the book, and the story unwinds itself into a compelling and complicated plot. As he reads, Daniel finds himself and his own life merging into the story's plot. It transpires that there is a mysterious man named Lan Coubert ('the man without a face') who is determined to destroy all copies of Carax's books. Daniel is threatened by Coubert and is determined to find out what happened to Carax, who fled to Paris and subsequently disappeared. Daniel finds that his own life has much in common with the author's. The book mixes magic realism, page-turning mystery, and Daniel's own real life. Daniel's once ordinary teenage existence is now filled with larger-than-life colorful and at times, terrifying characters. Among them are Fermn Romero de Torres, a beggar who Daniel and his father befriend and employ in the family bookstore; the evil police inspector Javier Fumero, who could be compared to Scarpia in Puccini's opera Tosca or Javert in Les Misrables. The corrupt Fumero uses the war as an excuse to practice his sadism and is widely feared in Barcelona. He is represented in the music by a fascist military march. The city of Barcelona becomes a character in the book and in the music. The Ramblas, the boulevard running through Barcelona's Gothic Quarter and the famous caf Els Quatre Gats (the four cats) come alive in the score through a Cobla, the traditional wind ensemble playing a sardana, typical Catalan folk music. Two parallel love stories turn up the heat: Julin Carax's passionate, forbidden love for Penlope, and Daniel's equally passionate and forbidden love for Beatriz (Bea). He predicted many events in history in coded form and although there are many ways to interpret these, many are believed to be accurate and Nostradamus is still considered to be a unique personality. Whether he is denounced as a charlatan or promoted as a myth he has surely moved humankind with his prophecies.Otto M. Schwarz, soundtrack composer since2001, wrote a cinematographic work about this man, who is probably the best-known prohet of the last 1000 years.

The author of Kosterflickornas visa "the Song of the Koster Girls" is Evert Taube (1890-1976). It is one of the 200 popular and beloved songs he wrote and which have made him one of Sweden's "national poets". His popularity and greatness is madeevident since he is honoured to be on the new 50 Kronor banknote which will be issued during 2015. The Koster islands are the most westerly inhabited part of Sweden. The islands are situated in the northern part of the county Bohusln, not far fromthe Norwegian border. The song text goes:Here is the sea that embraces our Bohusln islandsand carries our father and brother in a rocking boat.Come to the beach, come with me, come singby my sideout over Skagerack inthe calm summer night.The arrangement for flute and wind band is written by Jerker Johansson (born 1967), who is conductor of the Gteborg Wind Orchestra, which has made a CD-recording of the song with Evert Taube's son Sven-Bertilinterpreting his father's work.
