At the Splash with Sim (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

About 10 minutes walk from where the composer lives, there is a ford in a river. It is called The Splash and is one of his dog, Simba's, favourite places. No day is complete for him without a swim in the Splash, no matter what the weather is like. It is a lovely spot where the water swirls gently although on occasions when the river is in full spate it can rise quickly and become forceful. This piece reflects that, with its fluid motif running throughout. There is some decorative writing for the woodwind but the pace of the music is moderate and the technical demands are therefore easily manageable.

Stratosphere (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Schwarz, Otto M.

What do the American Joseph Kittinger and the Austrian Felix Baumgartner have in common? They both jumped from over 30km high with a parachute. While Kittinger's attempt on 16 August 1960 was from a height of 'only' 31,333 meters, Felix Baumgartner broke this record on 14 October 2012 with a breath-taking 38,969 meters. This composition Stratosphere describes the adventure, from climbing into the capsule with help of a balloon, to the short pause in the stratosphere, and the jump, the turbulence during the free-fall descent, and finally the opening of the parachute and the safe landing.Duration: 6:00

This is the Day (Concert Band with Optional Choir - Score and Parts) - Rutter, John - Noble, Paul

Commissioned by the Dean and Chapter of Westminster Abbey as a wedding gift for Prince William and Kate Middleton, this anthem was composed early in 2011, with a brief that it should be about 4 - 5 minutes in length, for choir and organ, with a text from the psalms. The composer writes: 'My first thought was that the text should embrace both rejoicing and blessing, and I chose verses from five psalms which seemed to encompass what I wanted to express on behalf of us all. My next thought was that I wanted to write music which would be welcoming in spirit to the royal couple, their families, and to all the people witnessing this happy occasion all over the world.' This arrangement for Concert Band and Chorus may be performed by band alone.

Performing this delightful arrangement of familiar symphonic themes by Beethoven, Mozart, Dvorak, Haydn, Bach, Offenbach, and Brahms works very well with the trumpets standing in front of the band, but is also effective with them seated within the ensemble. Lost in the Crystal Cave (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Turner, Jeffrey E.

Imagine finding yourself stumbling alone in a darkened cave. It's so quiet, the only thing you can hear is your own heartbeat. Lost, you pray for guidance, and suddenly, sound paints a picture of what your eyes can't see. Met with a shimmering mirror of sparkling percussion, you follow a pinpoint of light shining off a solo trumpet. The darkness filling with heaven's light, you are no longer "Lost in the Crystal Cave." You've found a way out by following footprints left for you in the music.Duration: 3:50

Daydreaming (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Fagan, Gary

Daydreaming is a short, light-hearted tone poem with a very simple lyrical quality reflecting a behaviour most of us exhibit from time to time. The melodic theme occurred to the composer as he was sitting in his studio looking out the window and doing what the title suggests he was doing.Duration: 2:15

Distant Land (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Rutter, John - Noble, Paul

Distant Land was originally written in 1991 as a choral piece inspired by the release of Nelson Mandela from prison. Rutter was encouraged to make a purely orchestral version, from which this band arrangement has been adapted. Rutter says: "Listeners who know the original versions may miss the texts, but looking at it another way, your imagination can be set free with no words to constrain you and tell you what the music is 'about'". Distant Land will surely become a tribute to the life of Nelson Mandela, who was a leader of the anti-apartheid movement who eventually became South Africa's first black president to be elected in a fully democratic election.
