4 Miniatures for Winds: 1. Wind 2. Storm 3. Rain 4. Sun and Snow There was a little child who enthusiastically told a story ... and a composer who was equally inspired by the child and its story to write these miniatures. At the premier performance of my composition "Arcus" in March 2011, when I explained how a piece about the rainbow came into being, a little girl came up to me and asked: "Thiemo, what about the man in the clouds?" I obviously had forgotten to include him, though he is as the little girl informed me of extreme importance in the sky: "He sits in the clouds and is responsible for the weather. He shakes rain, wind, storm or snow out of the clouds, he pushes them aside to let the sunshine through or he models them into funny figures, making people on earth smile." Fascinated by the girl's ingenuous ideas I created this small composition, sitting in my study and letting my mind wander into the sky. As the man in the clouds naturally has to have a name, I decided to call him "Cloud(iu)s ... man in the clouds". I dedicate this piece to the children of my beginner's band, who show me again and again how wonderful and precious it is to delight in the small things in life ...

This is one of Harold Bennett's (pseudonym of Henry Fillmore) lesser-known marches, but that is no indication of its quality. It is a 6/8 march in standard march form but what is unique about this classic from the original Bennett Band Book is that it is one of the few Bennett marches that includes a "break strain." This makes it a great introduction for younger students to prepare them to play the more challenging marches of Fillmore, Sousa, and others.

The term Doppler Effect describes the aural phenomenon of something changing pitch relative to what direction it is traveling in relation to the listener. An example is when a siren coming towards you is higher in pitch then when it is going away from you. What are the true qualities of a person? Outward beauty or inner values? Or perhaps a balance of the two? This question has probably been posed by everyone at some time or another, and the answer is as challenging as it is subjective. This is also the theme of this work. The poet and soldier Cyrano de Bergerac is known for his big nose and his great intellect. The 17th century novelist harbours feelings for the beautiful Roxane but is sure that this love will never be reciprocated. Roxane herself falls in love with the cadet Christian de Neuvillette, who is certainly handsome but could be described as stupid. Cyrano de Bergerac writes love poems on behalf of Christian to win Roxane's heart. And then there is the Count Guiche, who is married but also wants to make her his mistress. Christian and Roxane eventually marry and the furious Count Guiche sends Christian and Cyrano, who serve together in the Captains of Gascony regiment, to the front and, some months later, on a suicide mission. Shortly before the battle, Roxane confesses to her husband that she no longer loves him so much for his beauty as for his inner values. Christian is dismayed and begs Cyrano to tell Roxane the truth, but he can't bring himself to do so. Christian de Neuvillette dies in battle and Cyrano de Bergerac remains silent about the true provenance of the letters. Only much later does the truth come to light: scarred by the war, Cyrano visits Roxane in the convent where she has been living since Christian's death and confesses his love for her. He ultimately dies in Roxane's arms.Duration: 8.30
