This piece depicts the refined beauty of the Grand Canyon at sunrise and sunset. These are the best times to view the Canyon with the sun low in the sky casting shadows that give depth and form to the vast panorama. Angel's Gate is one of the many named rock formations in the canyon. The composer has tried to depict the sights and sounds of dawn, birdsong in the early morning sky and the gradual revelation of the Canyon itself as sunlight reaches into its rocky depths.Towards the end of the piece, to the sound of a tolling bell, we are however reminded of the dangers that the beauty of the Grand Canyon so cleverly hides.Duration: 10:40

In the first movement, a broad theme is announced by the timpani themselves, and immediately echoed and modified by the full wind band. Material is embroidered by woodwinds and developed by the soloist. The second movement (Adagio) is virtually an aria in which we are left with an expressive mood conjured from the timpani themselves. The last movement is a romp - characteristic use of quasi-folk material is well suited to the band and the rhythmic characteristics of the timpani are highlighted.

It has also appeared as a vocal setting, but has now been faithfully transcribed for wind band by Brian Bowen and we are all sure that this will prove to be a popular addition to the repertoire.

Something of a classic in its brass band and piano versions! We are delighted, at last, to make this work available ith wind band accompaniment by the composer. Written in 1978, the work is constructed in three movements and is virtually a concerto for euphonium and band. The first movement begins with an unaccompanied motto theme, which uses all twelve notes of the scale but with a tonal feel. The slow second movement is based on an original song melody by the composer - 'The Eyes of God' - and affords lyrical and richly expressive playing that is typically euphonium. Movement three follows without a break - a capricious movement which ends triumphantly. Now available in versions for piano, brass band, wind band, and orchestra, Euphonium Music can be seen as a major contribution to the literature for the instrument. This lyrical composition set in the accessible key of concert B-flat uses multiple musical layers to create a musical impression of the moon's appearance.
