Aroldo, number 22 of the 32 operas written by Verdi, is certainly not one of the best-known works from "the genius of Busseto." Written in 1857, it is in fact a remake of the 1848 opera Stiffelio, which told a story of adultery and which was censored for its "indecent" content. Verdi found the censorship of Stiffelio unacceptable, and with a performance in Verona approaching at the start of 1851, he wrote to his editor, Ricordi: "If my libretto is censored, it will not be possible to obtain the effect I desire, so I would rather wait until I can rewrite the last scene." But the modifications to Stiffelio did not stop there. The setting, the historical period and the finale were also completely changed. In the process of converting Stiffelio to Aroldo, Verdi no doubt succeeded in strengthening certain moments. However, the fame of the three operas he had written in the meantime - Rigoletto, Il Trovatore and La Traviata - did not allow Aroldo to receive the recognition it deserved. The opera's symphony is indeed a superb work and contains moments of outstanding lyricism. The trumpet solo in the introduction is the longest written by Verdi for this instrument.Duration: 8:45

He composed this symphony in 1872/73 and used the melody from the song The Stork as the main theme for the Finale. Polish academic Nicolaus Copernicus was a genius, excelling in the fields of mathematics, physics, law and astronomy. He is most remembered for his then revolutionary model of the solar system. Going against the grain, he put forward the idea that the sun, and not the earth, was the focal point of our solar system and all the planets revolve around it. Despite the initial uproar his ideas caused, he revolutionised science during the 15th century. His influence can still be felt today and despite being separated by many centuries, Copernicus inspired composer Johan Nijs to write this exciting piece for concert band. 05:40

This tone poem entitled Frankenstein is based on the original novel by Mary Shelley (1797-1851). Victor Frankenstein creates life from pieces of many dead bodies. Soon, his monster comes to life. Though very intelligent, the monster has the maturity of a child. In a fit of rage, the monster kills William, Victor's younger brother. The monster finds Victor in The Alps and asks him to make him a mate. Victor makes him a mate, but kills her. The enraged monster tells Victor, "I will be with you on your wedding night." The monster forces his way into the wedding and kills Victor's fiance, Elizabeth. Victor chases the monster all the way to the Arctis where he dies of exhaustion. The monster finds Victor's body and realizes he has nothing to live for and goes away to die.

Johannes Brahms can be considered to be one of the top composers of the nineteenth century chamber music. He was a giant in this field and an eminent successor of Beethoven and Haydn. A masterpiece from his chamber music oeuvre is the trio in Eb opus 40 for piano, violin and natural French horn.In 1865, the year of his Horn trio, Brahms's mother Christiane died. It's well known that he fostered deep feelings for her. The slow part of the Horn trio with the tempo indication Adagio Mesto (sad) can be considered as a lamentation for his mother.The first performance of the piece took place in Zrich on 28th November 1865 and it was published a year later in November 1866.In this version for Wind Band Kevin Houben stays as true as possible to the original. The result is a deep and dark orchestration of the wonderful Adagio Mesto. A challenge for any orchestra and extremely suitable as concert piece.

Chips In A Bag - Leslie Searle

Leslie Searle came to Germany in 1965 as a Saxophonist in the Band of the Royal Air Force. He has composed and made arrangements of music by Kurt Edelhagen among others, and has played in numerous bands. He is now director of a private music school in Remscheid.

According to Sousa scholar Paul Bierley, Sousa often remarked that the old Scottish ballad Annie Laurie was the most beautiful of all folk songs. In 1883 he wrote the march Bonnie Annie Laurie based on this favorite folk song. In 1880 Sousa became the fourteenth leader of the United States Marine Band, and this was undoubtedly one of the marches that he composed during this period. Highlighted and enhanced in this march-style setting, this wonderful melody never sounded better.
