Sasha Takes a Train, commissioned by the USAF Band of Mid-America, was inspired by a memorable overnight train ride in Eastern Europe taken by the composer's family. The music is intended to evoke the motion and sounds of the train and the noisy, scary, surprising and joyous character of the journey. Sasha refers to the composer's then 13 month old son Alexander who managed to sleep through much of his first train adventure.

The Opera "The Cossacs" by Catharinus Elling is based on the Nikolai Gogol novel about Taras Bulba."The Cossacs" was premiered in 1897 at Eldorado in Kristiania (the old name on Norway's capitol Oslo). Despite positive response in the papers of that time, the opera was newer performed again in it's entirely. The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation have an abbreviated recording in it's archives, but no complete performance is known to date.The Norwegian National Opera Orchestra recorded both the overture and the dances in 2021, conducted by Ingar Bergby. Thet are both a part of the CD "Norwegian Opera Overtures".This arrangement is not commissioned by anyone, but rather written to better the availability of quality Norwegian orchestral music arranged for Concert Band.This edition is a good opportunity to be more familiar with Norwegian heritage of orchestral music.

John Bourgeois, Director Emeritus of the United States Marine Band, past president of the American Bandmasters Association, president of the John Philip Sousa Foundation, American vice president of the International Military Music Society, mentor and friend. "Favor And Treasure" is based on "John's Theme," a bold, original theme conveying inspirational imagery of excellence, artistry and duty congruous with Col. Bourgeois' distinguished career at the helm of the band to which President Thomas Jefferson gave the title "The President's Own." To honor Bourgeois' affinity for Cajun folk music, the old Cajun waltz, "J'ai Passe Devant Ta Porte" is also used, most prominently in the quasi-zydeco section of the work.
