This brilliant work applies the ancient practice of tropes to this powerful composition that sets a high standard in wind band literature. Repeated wind and percussion patterns and ostinati represent centuries of rituals and are stated in unmistakably bold fashion. In the central section, members of the ensemble create a haunting effect by whispering "Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison, Kyrie eleison" as though they are voices echoing from centuries past. The American conductor and composer Uri Hodorov, actually working in Israel, has been inspired by the great Johann Sebastian Bach to write this original, light and rather easy 'toccata and fugue' for symphonic band. The title clearly indicates that, despite the references to the master's model, this composition is contemporary and rather short, in order to be within reach of the average wind band. A nice tribute to old father Back avoiding the ambush of the pastiche.

Get on Board - Stephen Bulla
Stephen Bulla strikes gold again with this accessible but jazzy Trombone section feature. There is plenty of rhythmic fun for everyone while the trombones get that important time out front. The old spiritual "The Gospel Train" lends itself beautifully to a swing-jazz treatment and if there's anyone who knows how to bring the jazz idiom to the concert band setting it's Stephen Bulla. If you prefer, two Trombone soloists can be featured while the rest of the section plays along on the Euphonium part. Your band will want to do this one again and again, and so will you, so Get On Board!

Russian Gipsy Song - Piet Swerts
The origin of the song Piet Swerts arranged for concert band in Russian Gipsy Song probably lies with Russian gypsies, who know it under the title Dorogoj Dlinnojn and who ardently consider it their mental property.The melody of this Russian folk song is better known under the title Those Were the Days My Friend, the song that singer Mary Hopkins made famous in 1968. Within a year after she had issued this song, well over five million records of it had been sold. There are also versions in French (Les temps des fleurs), Spaans (Qu tiempo tan feliz), Italian (Quelli erano giorni), and German (An jenem Tag) of this song full of nostalgia about the "good old days."

£90.30Concertino Opus 26 - Carl Maria von Weber
Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) was a pupil of Michael Haydn. Before he was fifteen years old he had already composed an opera, a mass and piano music. He was subsequently director of the Prague Opera House and Music Master at the Dresden Court. The overtures to his operas DER FREISCHTZ and OBERON are still often performed by wind bands, though it is often lesser known that von Weber also wrote pieces for 'Harmoniemusik', such as a CONCERTINO IN C for oboe and small wind band.Von Weber wrote most of his clarinet works for the famous German clarinettist Heinrich Brmann (1784-1874). This was the case for his CLARINET CONCERTO No1 in F and his CLARINET CONCERTO No2 in Eb and for the CONCERTINO, all composed in 1811. Von Weber was very impressed by Brmann's virtuosity and the expressiveness of the clarinet. The CONCERTINO is one of the very great works of the classical clarinet repertoire. A slow introduction is followed by a cheerful theme repeated with several contrasting variations. This pre-eminently romantic clarinet piece was scored for symphonic band by the French composer and arranger Charles Lhomme (Hargicourt 1889).

Composing music also involves being able to imagine the sound of something that has no sound of its own. "Via della Terra" is a soundtrack without a film, a story without a narrator; "Via della Terra" is a street in a town, but not just any street, because if a street could tell its story, "Via della Terra" would not know where to start or where and indeed if it should finish. Like all "Vie della Terra", this street in this piece is full of sounds, none of which, however, have ever belonged to it for more than a fleeting moment, just long enough to be reflected here and there and then up and away from the earth, to be lost in the air. The steps of Mozart as a child as he whistled a piece of music, never again to be remembered or written; the philosophical thoughts, or mere everyday cares, uttered to a friend by Rosmini (whispered? or declaimed?); the excited or humorous comments of people who saw Depero's futuristic works for the first time; the voices of marketstall owners, rendered louder and more acute by the noisy crowd of women sorting through the stalls of rustling and colourful silk (so many desires; silent pauses between one item of gossip and the next); the absolute and devastating roar of cannons that violated every corner of the town, injuring bodies and mutilating the memories of its inhabitants... followed by a seeming eternity, as the citizens held their breath, waiting... "Via della Terra" is the old imperial road along which the town of Rovereto was built and has developed. "Via della Terra" is music for an imaginary, impossible and simultaneous representation of all its stories. The composer has always lived in this town, which he dearly loves, and on innumerable occasions he has imagined the voices, smells, people and the lives that have been such a part of it. With his composition, "Via della Terra", Marco Somadossi won second prize (no first prize was awarded) at the XXI Corciano International Competition for original band music in the grade 4 category.

A magnificent programmatic work for symphonic band that is an offering to Pele, the Goddess of Hawaii's volcanoes. The work opens with primordial, mysterious sounds representing the foreboding volcanoes of Hawaii. We are then introduced to Pele as a tall, beautiful young woman. This is one of the forms she can take and it represents her powers of creation and beauty. This gives way to the active and destructive Pele, often taking the form of an old woman, wrinkled and bent with age. The following lyrical section of the piece is the full statement of Pele's theme of creation and beauty. As this theme settles, we begin to hear the ground pop and crack letting us know that new lava is beginning to bubble and flow. Suddenly and violently, one of her volcanoes erupts, creating massive chaos and destruction. After the eruption subsides, Pele's theme of creation and beauty returns again. A wonderful addition to any concert or festival performance by mature bands. Exceptional in every respect!

The Opera "The Cossacs" by Catharinus Elling is based on the Nikolai Gogol novel about Taras Bulba."The Cossacs" was premiered in 1897 at Eldorado in Kristiania (the old name on Norway's capitol Oslo). Despite positive response in the papers of that time, the opera was newer performed again in it's entirely. The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation have an abbreviated recording in it's archives, but no complete performance is known to date.The Norwegian National Opera Orchestra recorded both the overture and the dances in 2021, conducted by Ingar Bergby. Thet are both a part of the CD "Norwegian Opera Overtures".This arrangement is not commissioned by anyone, but rather written to better the availability of quality Norwegian orchestral music arranged for Concert Band.This edition is a good opportunity to be more familiar with Norwegian heritage of orchestral music.
