    A Life Well Lived (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

    A Life well lived was commissioned by the Morrish family in 2023 on the death of Ian Morrish. It is dedicated to them with the inscription in loving memory of Ian.I knew Ian from early days at Southall Citadel Salvation Army Corps and then our paths crossed again briefly when I joined the Central Band of the Royal Air Force. Ian had been a euphonium player in the band for many years and was about to leave to take up a teaching post in Surrey. He was always very involved in choral music, conducting choirs throughout his life. I therefore wanted to keep this piece song-like and actually started with the song which appears from letter D to the end, which can always be performed on its own. From there I used the rising octaves that introduce the song to form the beginning of the work, with the feeling in the back of my head of a river starting to flow. There is nothing referential in the more dramatic sections towards the beginning, but every life has its dramas and I wanted something to give some balance to the tranquil nature of much of the piece. In the middle of the work I use a little motif taken from a song I remember Ian singing in his floating tenor voice. I develop the motif a little as an accompaniment to a new line which has, for me, a sense of purpose and directness and has an oblique reference to the RAF March Past. This builds to the aforementioned song and from there the music flows with its highs and lows to its peaceful conclusion.- Rob WiffinDuration: 3.30

    I Was Glad When They Said Unto Me (Choir with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Parry, Hubert C. - Noble, Paul

    I Was Glad is an introit commonly used in the Anglican Church, and also used as an anthem traditionally sung at the coronation of the British monarch. Its most famous setting was written in 1902 by Sir Hubert Parry. Parry's version was composed for the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902, and revised in 1911 for that of King George V, when the familiar introduction was added. This setting employs antiphonal choir effects and brass fanfares. Apart from the imperial splendour of the music, the chief innovation is the incorporation in the central section of the acclamations Vivat Rex... or Vivat Regina... (Long live King/Queen...) with which the King's or Queen's Scholars of Westminster School have traditionally greeted the entrance of the monarch since the coronation of King James II in 1685. This section is generally omitted when the anthem is performed on other occasions. At the last coronation, that of Elizabeth II in 1953, the acclamation took the form of Vivat Regina Elizabetha. Parry's setting of I Was Glad was performed on 29 April 2011 at the Westminster Abbey wedding of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (formerly Kate Middleton) as the processional music for the bride and her father and the bridal attendants. It had previously been performed at the wedding of the Duke's parents, Charles, Prince of Wales and Diana, Princess of Wales in 1981.

    Cole Porter was one of the great masters of Broadway musicals during the thirties, forties and fifties, with So in Love, from the musical Kiss Me Kate, being one of his best loved works.     This 'Canzona' comes from Mozart's comic opera "The Marriage of Figaro," first performed in Vienna in 1786. Cherubino is a young page in the household of Count Almaviva, although the role is written for a soprano and usually cast for a singer with 'boyish' looks. The song, entitle "Voi che sapete" (Tell me fair ladies), is introduced in the opera as if written by Cherubino himself and is simply a diversion rather than of relevance to the plot. Although initial reaction to "The Marriage of Figaro" was somewhat lukewarm, it has of course established itself as one of the great comic operas, and this canzona became and 18th century "pop" song.

    1861 (Concert Band) - Newman, Jonathan

    1861 is a lyric hymn/fantasia for young concert bands, based on the beautiful 19th century Anglican hymn "Lead Me, Lord" (written in 1861 by Charles Sebastian Wesley). The hymn itself features a gorgeous melodic line over biting harmonies and striking counterpoint, and provides the pillars for this work. First is a soloistic treatment, followed with a dramatic full band tutti, and finally a section of evocative humming. Throughout are unique textures and colourful improvisitory accompaniments.

    This composition is based on the children's song Three Blind Mice, of which the melody is featured in a range of variations: in a canon, in inversion, in minor, transformed, with changing harmonisations and orchestrations, and in different times and tempi.     Capriccio (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Holst, Gustav - Noble, Paul

    The following notes have been excerpted by the arranger from those presented in the Introduction by Imogen Holst, daughter of Gustav Holst: Holst wrote this work in the spring of 1932, while he was guest Lecturer in Composition at Harvard University. He had been asked by Nathaniel Shilkret to write 'a short radio piece, not longer than five or six minutes.' for a composers' series on folk music themes. Holst wrote to me on 13 May 1932, saying: 'On May 1 I started sketching a piece for Shilkret's Radio jazz band in New York. I finished the sketch on the 4th and the full score on the 8th... Shilkret wanted something on American airs but I've left them out because I prefer my own so he may reject the thing.' Shilkret was enthusiastic about the piece, but he was unable to use it for his series. 'I hate to give it up,' he told the composer, 'but I cannot play it because it is not based on a definite English or American folk theme.' Holst never revised his hurriedly-written work, probably because he had too many other things to write during the remaining two years of his life, when he was having to spend a good deal of his time in hospital. The autograph manuscript of his original full score is in the British Library, MS Add.47833. The work had no name: Holst referred to it either as his 'Jazz band piece' or as 'Mr. Shilkret's Maggot.' The score needed editing. There were gaps and patches, with incomplete dynamics and phrase marks. I made the version for orchestra and named it 'Capriccio' in spite of the viola's (now saxophone's) expressive opening, because from the moment of the marimba's first animated remark there can be no doubt about the mood of the music. - Imogen Holst (1968)

    Blue Jeans (Trombone Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

    In 2008 the trombonist, Chris Jeans, was invited to be a featured soloist at a British Trombone Society event. He contacted Stan Kitchen at Studio Music Company to see if he had any new material for trombone. Stan then got in touch with me, as I had already written a piece for another trombone player, Brett Baker. This piece, 'Shout' was programmed for the same event so we needed to find something new for Chris.The title 'Blue Jeans' came to my mind, thus linking a blues-style piece with the obvious reference to Chris's surname. I spoke to Chris and he liked the sound of it so then I had to go away and write a solo to match the title!I managed to get a version with piano accompaniment done in time for Chris to perform at the trombone event and have now had a chance to complete the band version. Chris is a great chap, a good friend and a wonderful trombone player so I hope people enjoy listening to this solo that bears his name.- Rob WiffinDuration: 3.30
