Lively and Cheerful - This part is based on the beautiful folksong 'Lou roussigno que volo'; the composer uses the band as if it were one big tambourin.This work obtained a Second Prize at the International Composition Contest at Hilvarenbeek, The Netherlands in 1976.

This work, composed in 1985, wants to shake you up and put a spell on you at the same time. Today, humanity is threatened by many dangers, many of which we are not able to banish. We need help from a higher power. The Chorale "Aus tiefer Not schrei' ich zu dir" (from deep distress I cry to you) illustrates this. This motif appears in diverse variations. But, in his arrogance the wicked man does not believe in the rule of evil demons in the world.With the Gregorian melody in the sequence "Dies irae" (day of wrath) from the requiem mass, the nearing of disaster is announced: without God man goes astray. He falls into ruin.To deepen the poignancy of this composition, Paul Huber cited a dramatic episode from his symphony "The nostraie aetatis angoribus" (from the anxiety of our time).

Commissioned by KU Leuven on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of KU Leuven.Chasing the MysteryKevin HoubenDedicated to the Wind Orchestra Universitair Harmonieorkest (UHO) of KU Leuven.Chasing the Mystery is the final movement of the triptych Beyond the Horizon of Thought.On the occasion of KU Leuven's 600th anniversary in 2025, the university commissioned Kevin Houben to compose a new work tailored to the Universitair Symfonisch Orkest, the Universitair Harmonieorkest and the Leuvens Universitair Koor. Maud Vanhauwaert, writer-in-residence during the 2023-2024 academic year, provided a poetic libretto.With Beyond the Horizon of Thought, Kevin Houben created not only a unique anniversary composition for more than 250 student musicians. The composition also conveys a universal message that perfectly reflects the spirit of the celebrating university: keep searching, keep developing yourself and keep hoping - even in turbulent times.From a compositional perspective, the work is built around themes and motifs with a clear symbolism. Kevin Houben explains: "I use a technique in which letters are converted into musical notes - a method also used by great masters such as Bach, Bartk and Shostakovich. This musical signature forms the basis of the melodic structure. In this way, 'KUL600' is represented by the notes D - G - E - F (re - sol - mi - fa)."The composition is conceived as a triptych: three movements that flow seamlessly into one another and are performed by different orchestral formations, yet together form a single whole. The work opens with the symphony orchestra, where the thematic 'KUL600' cells are introduced and explored. In this movement, Awakening the Wonder, several highlights establish a musical connection with the following movements.In the second movement, The Urge of Search, the choir sings a cappella to the poem Het is het by Maud Vanhauwaert, in which she reflects on the tireless quest for knowledge that has characterized the university for 600 years. Classical Gregorian techniques and traditional voice leading enter into dialogue with contemporary techniques, as the singers alternately whisper, call out and proclaim.Finally, the wind orchestra introduces the third movement, Chasing the Mystery. With a searching and anticipatory character, the orchestra presents the thematic cells in soloistic fashion, based on the main melody of the choral movement. References once again appear to the rhythmic 'KUL600' cells, which ultimately culminate in a grand apotheosis. A solitary soprano saxophone opens the finale with the 'KUL600' theme in its most intimate and meditative form. The expanded choir then joins the orchestra for an impressive final chord, musically preparing KU Leuven for the next 600 years.Beyond the Horizon of Thought premiered on Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 April 2025 at LUCA Campus Lemmens, and was also performed on 9 May 2025 at Concertgebouw Brugge on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of KU Leuven. More than 250 musicians from the Universitair Symfonisch Orkest (USO) conducted by Edmond Saveniers, the Leuvens Universitair Koor (LUK) conducted by Kevin Hendrickx, and the Universitair Harmonieorkest (UHO) conducted by Erwin Scheltjens shared the stage.Cover illustration design: Grotezk Studio.

After gradual development, both melodies sound together in a grand tutti.Fanfare & Hymn was commissioned by the Royal Concert Band Ons Verlangen, Beverst (Belgium), as a tribute to the committee members and musicians Edgard Thijssen and Jos Appermont. They were like father figures who, with their lasting commitment, helped the band become the thriving music society that it is to this day.Based on this theme, I have tried to evoke various emotions and atmospheres: the pride that characterises the group, nostalgia for the wonderful time both musicians experienced in the band, and finally, deep gratitude for everything they did.Bert Appermont

This arrangement was made for The Suoni Wind Orchestra of Skien, Norway, and performed for the first time at their Promenade Concert "At Sea" at the Ibsen Culture Center, March 8th 2014, being the final number of the concert. Participating this concert was also the Choir Canto Libre and the two vocal soloists were Eli Kristin Hansveen and Andreas Hoff. Since that time this arrangement has been used also at other concerts involving choir and soloists. It is important that tempo is not too slow and one has to be thorough with details in the percussion parts. Three Washington Statues was commissioned by the United States Army Band "Pershings Own", led by Colonel Thomas H. Palmatier. Washington D.C. contains some of the world's most iconic monuments, memorials and statues. Philip Sparke has chosenthree of these as the inspiration for this piece: 'The Lincoln Memorial' in the form of a Greek Doric temple in which the composer depicts the grandeur of this monument; 'The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial' on which steps the iconic speech 'I havea dream' was given - the music is both reverential as well as powerful referring to Martin Luther Kings' speech; and the 'Encore' statue in memory of the world famousAfrican-American composer, pianist and bandleader Duke Ellington. In this finalmovement, Philip Sparke catches the virtuosic, energetic and unique dynamism of Ellingtons' music.

To play for the landlady and her daughter: The older musicians do their utmost to please the mother, whereas the youngsters try to draw the attention of her daughter.III. To play at the annual Saint Cecilia Festivities: This is festive music, sometimes solemn, sometimes caustic, always light and fresh; towards the end there is a strong enlargement and a stretto. This work was selected by the Belgian Radio for the 1977 ERU Contest in Yougoslavia and was performed by the Belgian Gendarmerie Band conducted by Roland Cardon.
