    Trumpet Fiesta - André Waignein

Trumpet Fiesta spotlights four trumpet soloists. From the opening bars the music expresses a feeling of happiness. This swift and lively piece begins with a series of dynamic staccato passages from the soloists. The central section, in the minor key, contrasts with the beginning of the work and during this transition period there are only two solo trumpet parts. The first theme then quickly reappears before moving on to a peaceful and more melodic trio in which long and flowing melody lines allow the soloists to let the beautiful sound of the trumpet fully reveal itself. The sound pyramid then formed by the whole band leads this spectacular piece to a powerful finale.

    Centennial Salute - Philip Sparke

Just based on its title, this piece has to be celebratory and up-beat, which it is! It opens with a stately fanfare, first played on the low brass before the entire band joins in. This gives way to a contrasting lyrical theme which develops until it joins up with the fanfare to complete the opening section. A lively and heavily syncopated vivo follows, cast as a traditional march, complete with a 'bass strain' and trio. After the original march theme returns, a climax leads back to a reprise of the majestic opening, which brings the piece to an appropriately triumphant close.

    Biberussa - Bert Appermont

'Biberussa', the old name of the small town of Beverst in Belgium, is a combination of the words 'biber' and 'ussa', meaning beaver and river. This concert march was composed for the 100th anniversary of the Koninklijke Harmonie (Royal Concert Band) 'Ons Verlangen' from Beverst, a place where the composer had his first musical training. After the opening passage, a proud, heroic theme is heard. As a contrast, it is followed by a simple chorale melody and both themes then appear simultaneously in a grand tutti passage. New Forest March - Johnnie Vinson

Here is a terrific march for young players written in the traditional British style. The opening strains are folk-like in nature with underlying modal harmonies, while the stately trio is reminiscent of the processional style of Elgar and other British composers. The "New Forest" refers to a region in southern England established as a royal hunting preserve by William the Conqueror around the year 1079, which has remained largely unchanged since ancient times. Dur: 2:10 (Grade 2)
