Waltz for Debby - Bill Evans

"Waltz for Debby" was written by American jazz pianist and composer Bill Evans (1929-1980). It was heard for the first time on his 1956 debut record "New Jazz Conceptions". This recording made the tune his most famous one, included on several later recordings both for solo piano and his usual trio format. It also became a favorite on almost all his concerts. The tune is a kind of a musical portrait of Evans' niece, Debby Evans. In Scandinavia, Swedish singer Monica Zetterlund made it popular for a wider audience through her 1964-recording accompanied by Evans and his trio. On this recording, the song was renamed "Monicas vals".

    Triad - Richards

A delightful trumpet trio with band accompaniment by J.J. Richards. The trumpet trio parts are very effective and not too demanding while the band accompaniment lends just the right amount of support. Although it sounds very "Leroy Anderson-ish" it was written several years before "Bugler's Holiday". A superb change of pace on any concert program!

    Spring March - Jonahthan Dagenais

Spring March by Jonathan Dagenais was written for the Saint-Edmond High School music program in Quebec, Canada. Spring March is a short, lively, and exciting concert march for beginner bands. With several thematic and humorous elements, this piece is a fun way to work on lightness of style, functional balance, tempo stability, and is perfect for teaching cut time and the traditional march form and structure. There are clear stylistic contrasts between all the different sections of the piece and the beautiful lyrical trio section offers a great opportunity to work on phrasing and support. With efficient and exciting percussion parts, the piece also offers interesting lines and melodies for every instrument. (2:57) .

A Centennial Journey - Philip Sparke

A Centennial Journey was commissioned by the Norwegian ensemble Stavanger Musikkorps av 1919 to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2019. The work was premiered under conductor Morten E. Hansen at their Jubilee Concert in the Stavanger Konserthus on 28th September 2019. The piece opens dramatically with a sweeping melody on horns and saxophones under florid woodwind figuration, building to a majestic climax. A trio for the trombones calms the mood until the opening melody returns in a gentler style, eventually building to a busy molto vivo. The woodwind figuration continues over a series of brass trios until the main theme of the work appears on clarinets and euphoniums. This develops to introduce a change of key, featuring a long, hymn-like melody on clarinets and horns. The melody is then taken up by the full band, interspersed with sporadic brass fanfares. The opening of the molto vivo returns and leads to a return of the opening horn melody, building to a thrilling coda based on previous melodic material.

In Charge - Concert March - Jerker Johansson

In Charge was commissioned by the Home Guard Band of Eksj to honour Thomas Samuelsson, whose efforts with the orchestra have been of great significance. He was a driving person within Swedish military music and furthermore project manager for Eksj International Tattoo. Thomas worked at Eksj Energy and the title of this work hints both to his occupation and his administrative leadership in the band. The first part of this concert march concentrates a lot on syncopation, while the second part is more robust with a traditional and lyrical trio part. In Charge was premiered by the Home Guard Band of Eksj on the 22th of December 2018, conducted by Maria Sandberg.

    Salutation - Philip Sparke

Salutation was commissioned by Japanese conductor and broadcaster, Yutaka Nishida, a dear friend of the composer Philip Sparke. Salutation follows fairly conventional march form. A short fanfare introduces the main theme, played by clarinets and saxophones. A bridge passage, mainly in the brass, heralds a change of key and a legato second subject, again played initially by the clarinets, which leads to the conventional trio theme, which is then repeated by the full band. Sections of the second subject lead back to the home key and a return of the main theme, embellished with woodwinds.

    Concertango - Luis Serrano Alarcón

Opus III is proud to announce that we are now the exclusive distributor for North America and Asia of Concertango, by Luis Serrano Alarcn. A 25 minute work exploring musical fusion on multiple levels through the contrast of symphonic winds to a jazz trio (piano, bass, drums). Both groups are independent at times followed by a merge into a single unique musical force. The alto saxophone soloist stands as the uniting musical element between the two groups. The omnipresent and uniting musical force is the tango and, in particular, the works of Astor Piazzolla. Luis Serrano Alarcn has transformed the rhythms, ensemble settings and stylistic idioms into a powerful artistic statement that communicates to all. A highly effective work for mature ensembles.

    At Ease! - Matt Conaway

Personal stories from two generations of servicemen led to this charming and unique trumpet trio. Written in honor of the composer's grandfather, this setting represents the atmosphere in the barracks "after hours" when the soldiers aren't quite as gung-ho as usual. Unfortunately, inspections can happen without warning, and the troops quickly assemble, clean up their bunks, and display their staunch military discipline... until the officer leaves, and life can return to normal. With just minor tempo adjustments, this delightful piece is effective for players and audiences of all ages. A great, light-hearted bit of fun for your next concert!
