Featuring two melodic motives that are developed texturally and rhythmically throughout the piece, Vistas begins in a light, reflective manner before gradually building into a majestic contrapuntal statement by the brass. A driving percussion introduction begins the Vigoroso section and provides the rhythmic foundation for the second "Vista." This minor setting of the initial motives provides an exciting variation that features a variety of meter changes and syncopated passages. A restatement of the initial motives with the driving rhythmic accompaniment begins an extended conclusion that brings the piece to a dynamic finish. Duration: 4.15

Delmar Festival Overture is a powerful concert overture utilizing many of the contemporary compositional techniques that distinguish John O'Reilly's work. From the opening brass fanfare to the exciting conclusion, syncopated rhythms and numerous, interesting shifts of meter abound. Biting polychords establish the predominant harmonic structure for the opening "Allegro," but the majestic theme that follows in the horns and saxes takes on a decidedly British band style. The lyrical middle section begins with a fully scored chorale, which serves as the subject for a lovely melodic development featuring woodwinds and French horn. A brilliant brass fanfare ushers in a return to the opening section, which is now reorganized and further developed to bring this exciting overture to its dramatic conclusion. This work was commissioned in 1996 by the Arosa Cultural committee and first performed in Arosa in that year. The majestic introduction opens with trombones and euphonium, heralding a legato theme, chorale-like in character. A pair of flutes introduce a new theme. A trumpet introduces a series of highly syncopated solos, which feature many metre changes, and the tempo increases when playful motifs are exchanged between various sections of the band. A solo clarinet introduces an expressive tune. A brass chorale follows, with interruptions from the flute and bassoon, until the clarinet tune is played by the whole band. This reaches a climax and the mood subsides to reach a quiet horn chord. The broad legato tune returns and the excitement increases until the march theme triumphantly returns to full band. This leads to the coda which is based on the opening fanfare and closes the work emphatically. £154.99Symphonic Variations (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob
This composition is based on a passacaglia theme, in which artistic perfection, symphonic drama and oriental melody lines play a role. The passacaglia is originally a dance made up of a series of variations above a bass line constantly present as an ostinato. It is not in this sense that the "Symphonic Variations" are in the passacaglia form but in the sense of the open form of the variations. Jacob de Haan, himself originally an organist, took his inspiration for this piece from the famous passacaglia for organ in C-minor by J.S. Bach. Following the introduction of the passacaglia theme (in the bass) the entry by the trumpets and trombones forms the majestic start to a musical adventure, in which this theme (often fragmentary) returns in variations. Then there follow two faster movements with dramatic contrasts and virtuose passages. Particularly striking here is the use of two characteristic intervals from the beginning of the theme namely the minor second and the augmented fourth. An apause in the composition comes in the slow bridge where a syncopated bourdon (perfect fifth) is constantly repeated. The tension grows in dynamics and harmony, and the oriental-flavour becomes obvious in the melody. We arrive at a faster movement via an accelerando, in which a perpetuum mobile based on the passacaglia theme is central. Finally the whole flows into a martial theme, in which the ostinato accompaniment n the descant derives from the passacaglia theme.Duration: 11:15

Concerto Dynamico is a sparkling work opening with a majestic introduction in which the whole band presents the main theme. The volume together with the broad melodic lines, create a robust opening that leads to a dazzling allegro. Syncopated rhythms produce a cheerful note, supported by the percussion. A charming andante follows, in which various instrument groups play the main theme. In the succeeding moderato marziale, the same theme can be heard as in the last allegro giocoso, but with another rhythm. Flutes Forever (Concert Band - Score and Parts)
As the title implies this new piece brings the flute section into the limelight. Following a fast introduction by the accompanying band, the flute section follows in three-parts with a rapidly syncopated/staccato theme. After a short interlude by the band, this opening theme appears once again. The rigaudon is a French Baroque dance in a lively duple meter. Rhythmically simple with a few syncopated lines, this short composition is the perfect introduction to this style. With varying dynamics, this is an excellent piece for developing a lighter playing style while also focusing on listening, articulations, and musical phrasing with repeats. Playable by as few as one on a part, this also works well for smaller bands with limited instrumentation.

Hangin' Ten is one of two movements of a composition called "Barefeet." The works may be played separately or together in a concert. This movement opens with sounds that are a bit mystical, then moving to a Latin jazz/rock style. It is quite syncopated and a fun song for your audience. The ranges are mostly within a Grade 4, though the last note of the Trumpet is C. Rhythmically it is challenging and a bit reminiscent of "West Side Story."

Nauset is one of three movements of a larger work called "Beachscapes." Nauset beach is located on the ocean side of Cape Cod Massachusetts, where the largest waves can be found on the New England coast. This music is a bit whimsical, portraying a beach scene with surfers falling off their boards, people on the beach, and people going to the food shacks. The music is quite syncopated and gives a jazzy, fun atmosphere.Ranges are mostly within a Grade 3 range, with the 1st trumpet's highest note is G.
