Butterflys Ball - Ryan Fraley
This compelling work incorporates elements of mystery and intrigue in a whirlwind of sounds, colors, and textures. Written in a quick 3/4 time, this engaging composition uses an attractive harmonic language, expressive melodic lines, and clever orchestrations to invoke the fairy-tale imagery of Robert Louis Stevenson's poetry in A Child's Garden of Verses. The playful nature of the piece moves between a lilting quality and a more lyrical expressive nature. Norge i rdt, hvitt og bltt ("Norway in Red, White and Blue") was commissioned by the Oslo Fagott Choir (yes, that is indeed a gay men's choir) for a concert with The Staff Band of the Armed Forces in 2015. I was given artistic licence to write a more modern and somewhat 'eclectic' arrangement for this originally Swedish melody written by Lars-Erik Larsson, which became something of a national liberation anthem when Nazi occupation ended in May 1945 - then with new lyrics by Finn B, Bias Bernhoft and Arild Feldborg.After the premiere in Oslo, and a music video with Oslo Fagott Choir and The Staff Band, broadcasted by Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) on Constitution Day during coronavirus lockdown in 2020, I was approached by many to write an instrumental version of the arrangement for concert band. Commissioned and premiered in 1987 by the U.S. Army Field Band, this was Claude T. Smiths last completed work, written to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution. Based on the hymn tune Resignation (How Firm a Foundation), this is a mature work by the celebrated American bandmaster, displaying the technical capabilities of each section of the wind band. A bold concert statement and a fitting commentary on the founding fathers whose faith and determination launched the great American Experiment.

Turandot - Giacomo Puccini
In 2006 the Saitama Sakae H.S. Wind Orchestra and the Kanazawa Technical H.S. Wind Ensemble both performed this piece for the All Japan Band Contest, drawing attention and interest from thousands of concert band fans. Declared by Band Journal to be "More dramatic than the original!", it is beautifully scored and highly descriptive of leading scenes from the Opera. Each year on the last Monday in June, the German city of Burgdorf celebrates the holiday of youth, the so called 'Solennitat'. It is the most important event occurring in the city and consists of three processions walking through the centre of town to celebrate, at the city's expense, the good results achieved in school. This new work by Franco Cesarini takes it's inspiration from this event and leads us through contrasting variations of a Swiss folk tune.
